I don't remember much about the movie. But considering that Joss has done 
everything in his power to distance the television show from the movie 
(entirely new supporting cast, different rules for vampires, making the 
Watcher a part of an organization rather than a single immortal being, that 
sort of thing), so if both Hemery and Sunnydale have similar mascots it's 
probably no big deal. Besides it's not unusual for several schools in the 
same state to have similar mascots. I happen to know that there are at least 
three schools in Washington that share my alma mater's mascot, the 
Highlanders.
