It could be that he saw the "First Evil" (or 'First Boredom') in the mirror
in order to fool the principal into thinking that Spike wasn't a vampire in
the car.

Also the problem with the show is that since the plot is so thin, all of the
favorite characters have to play stupid in order to get any action.
