RES: Re: "Lies Joss Whedon Told Me" - LONG

Hey...spoiler space just in case...

Just trowing in my two cents....You know, it`s been awhile since i last read
a review from you...Mostly i decided to stick with the glass is half full
side of thing, on account that it`s the last year and all....But even i got
to admit...it did get a little dull...I had pretty low expectations about
the season, so i`m enjoying what is coming...Sure, LOTS of things bug the
hell out of me, but nothing really that could make me stop watching, but
this ep in particular....It was not about what i would have liked to see(
lie B/W and X/W bonding, a true W/B/X/G scene and stuff like that) , but
what I DID see....More than SPike, i really disliked Buffy ...To me the big
heroes of the night were Anya, for saying what everybody is thinking( and
yeah, i do think that she was way to eager to kill Anya) and Giles, for
trying to make her see the truth...Even Wood ...the guy sees his mother get
killed he tries to get even and ends up as the vilain( go to any generic
board and see how Spike is a poor innocent ..), meanwhile the guy that did
the killing is the victm? The guy who has a soul and shows no remorse
whatsoever....I dunno, i tend to believe that the soul was not the one
thing that stoped you from killing, it was the one that made you feel really
bad about it afterwards ( like Faith, WIllow and even Angel) ...The guys
mother got killed by a vamp and Buffy understands? Really? I forgot that her
was killed by the evil tumor and the monstrous doctors....And Spike is the
strongest warrior? Is it because he was the only one atacked by the FE? Or
is it because he is a vamp and thus imortal? We all know that vamps are very
rare, very hard to find is Sunnydale I`m sure...MAybe Spike can beat the FE
by taking of his shirt and kill him with his manly boy.. it`s not like
Spike`s vamp force can do much, since the FE is non corporeal and all....I
dunno, maybe it`s because i`m a Willow fan and all, but wouldn`t she, the
one with the big mystical power be better suited for the job? Gee....

As for the Buffy sacrifice...I think that that meant she would be able to
sacrifice any of them, but Spike, but them i saw that last scene with Dawn
and now i`m not so sure...I got the idea she was denying what she said, at
least where Dawn was concerned, but still...If someone could explain it
better to me...I really wasn`t paying attention...Willow was already out,
figured there wasn`t much reason to watch....

Now, the B/S angle of things...I think that anyone who is not preperad to
see a huge B/S ending these final episodes is really naive...Everything they
didn`t do until now they`re doing at the end, including a huge declaration
on Buffy`s part...I won`t even be surprised if they bring back the "i`m the
only one who understands you" crap from season six...Unlike the past season
, where it was about dark and sex this one Buffy, despite all that happened
, is all concerned, longing....ANd to the writers that is what matters, give
the Spike adoring teenage girls what they want, it`s not like they have to
deal with the consequences, like bad memories and the downside of a
relationship with a vampire( the writers should have watched the final eps
from the third season...)...They may think that Spike is what Buffy
needs/wants right now, but when the right now is the show finale, that`s the
couple that is going to stick and that`s just argh.....

Well, that was it...REading back on it, so didn`t make any sense...Just had
to vent i guess...
Gotta go now...
Gonna make some poor bastard suffer...TAke out my anger :)

Rainne,

Joss is running things; he said before the seasson started that he had
already written the climax of the finale, and all the other writers have
said that he makes all the decisions. Goddard would not be able to make
these character and plot points without his approval, so let's not
whitewash Joss, please.

Buffy DID grow up. I saw it myself, in Seasons 1-3. The forced
reversions for the sake of making this show into "Spike: Heroic Rapist"
do not retcon Buffy into some immature child who can't deal with
problems?rather, they cast her as an intelligent woman, who for some
unknown reason has decided to make Spike the most important thing on the
planet and

....would kill her sister, but not him.

Excusing Buffy's decisions because the First Evil is just so dangerous
won't fly for me. How is the FE dangerous? It can't touch you. It
hasn't attacked the general populace. Its ubervamps are easy to kill
and the seal is deactivated. It hasn't even been around for a while.

If Buffy's afraid of this blowhard (which she sure wasn't in "Amends",
btw), a hangnail must reduce her to a sobbing wreck.

About the only thing the FE can do that's dangerous is mind-control
Spike. Which puts the lie to the "we need Spike" argument. Spike isn't
as strong as Buffy. He isn't as strong as Faith. He isn't as strong as
Angel. And he's being mindcontrolled by the enemy, against whom
physical strength doesn't matter anyway.
He also thinks that murdering defenseless humans is perfectly right and
his not killing Wood is some act of great generosity on his part. Dust
the bastard, now.

Any moral equivalency being drawn between Spike (who hunted down Nikki
purposefully and killed her for pleasure) and Nikki (who slew vampires
to defend herself and others) is a vile idea to me. It's like saying
that the cop is no different from the serial killer he arrests.
Ridiculous. And Nikki's death wasn't just a random vampire fight.
Spike premeditatedly stalked and killed her for his own pleasure, so
Robin has every right to be angry.

Finally, I'd love to believe that Buffy's belief in Spike is just
Angel-transference that's going to bite her in the ass, but the show
isn't saying that. They had Buffy repeat Nikki's line (which Buffy
didn't know anything about) to show that she's thinking how a slayer
should think, that she understands what's important, that she's right
and Giles and Robin are wrong, and that therefore her veneration of
SouledSpike, despite the fact that he's proven to be a mass-murdering
jackass, is the right thing to do.

Any thoughts that Buffy's deluding herself are merely US deluding
OURSELVES. Spike is God. Buffy is completely right. This is what the
show is saying to us.

And those are the Lies Joss Whedon Told Me.

Dan
