Scenes from the Rest of their Lives
Scene II
Took a walk alone last night
Slept inside your head
It was raining hard again,
crawled back into bed
Tried to catch up to you
But you moved too fast
Thought about a million things
Fell asleep at last
Using her cupped hands, she splashed cold water on her face.
Wetting down her hair, she combed through it with her fingers,
slicked it back away from her face, and checked the mascara
situation. Not too bad, a little smudged but sexy - pretty much
her usual look. Wriggling two fingers deep into the watch pocket
of her black jeans, she fished out the trusty tube of lipstick she
always kept there. Urban Decay's Love Junkie. "Only concealed
weapon I've ever carried," she chuckled to her reflection as she
applied, tweaked with a pinkie, blotted with piece of toilet paper
and gave herself a final appraising smile.
As often happened, the ritual brought back a face from the past,
causing her to quickly avert her eyes from the mirror. She
wrestled with the familiar bitter shame as she remembered
strong brown eyes full of fear and a bruised yet defiant mouth.
"Gone now," she whispered with regret. But not forgotten;
Number 11 on her list of perpetual amends, in fact. Taking a
deep breath, she summoned her self respect back out of hiding
and looked the hesitant young woman in the mirror straight in
the eye. She reminded herself payday was only two days away
and as usual, a quarter of her check would automatically be
deposited in Dawn's college account. At her request, Giles had
made the arrangements and kept her secret. She remembered
the warm strength of his hand on her shoulder when she
explained. "This is between me and Joyce."
She swiftly tossed back the last gulp of wretched coffee, crushed
the styrofoam cup in her fist, threw the bits in the toilet, then
rinsed off her hand. One more glance at the mirror, an errant
curl swept back, and she pushed open the washroom door and
strode out into the morning light toward the rental car waiting in
the gas station parking lot.
Once she was back on the highway, she pushed the car up
to 85, switched on the cruise control, and tried to imagine how
things would go when she reached her destination. The trip had
started out simple enough. A friendly visit to catch up. OK, there
was the not calling ahead of time and the hidden agenda of
checking to make sure her hostess was in fact stable, and the
reporting back to Giles and Xander, but that wasn't the problem.
It was last night's dream that had complicated things. Well, in
truth, things had been veering towards complicated for a while
now, but the dream cinched the deal.
She dug her sunglasses out of a jacket pocket and, somewhat
awkwardly, cleaned them on her t-shirt as she drove due east.
Straight toward the sun. Straight toward the formidable obstacle
standing between her and her heart's desire.
She slipped on the shades, glanced at the road slipping away
behind her in the rearview mirror and managed a grim smile as
she headed into the future.
"I'll be there by dinner time, B."
