No, betas are not mandatory, but they're always a good idea. Even the best writers and editors are not perfect and small little errors can be distracting to the reader. Better to have another pair of eyes review the story first. After all, you've already put so much effort into your story, why nottry your best to make it great?

Beta readers are not mandatory. Many writers employ them, either as
sounding boards for their ideas or to make sure the spelling, usage and
grammar are correct, but many others do not. Your choice entirely.
