An answer to Patrick?s evil little songfic challenge.
Damn you for capturing my 
imagination, and on a Monday at that!

In the true whedonesque spirit, it?s quite tragic.

Open on Buffy dancing for Sweet in the Bronze

BUFFY: (verse two) 
?Life's a song 
?You don't get to rehearse. 
?And every single verse 
?Can make it that much worse. 
[Anya and Tara stop dancing, move to background] 
[Buffy puts up a hand as if to shield herself from the
sight of her friends] 
?Still my friends 
?Don't know why I ignore 
?The million things or more 
?I should be dancing for. 

Back to the hard-rock tune. Buffy continues dancing
alone. 

BUFFY: 
?All the joy 
?Life sends 
?Family 
?And friends 
?All the twists 
?And bends 
?Knowing that 
?It ends 
?Well that 
?Depends 

Back to the ballad melody. 

BUFFY: 
?On if they let you go 
[looking around at the Scoobies] 
?On if they know enough to know 
[walking up the steps to the stage] 
?That when you've bowed 
?You leave the crowd. 

She walks up onto the stage, looks back at the others,
then at Sweet still sitting. He 
makes his string-pulling gesture. Buffy walks right up
to him. 

BUFFY: (verse three, new melody) 
?There was no pain 
?No fear, no doubt 
?Till they pulled me out 
?Of Heaven. 
[looks back at the others. Giles and Xander looking
surprised] 
?So that's my refrain. 
[Willow looking horrified] 
?I live in Hell 
[Xander looking horrified] 
?'Cause I've been expelled 
?From Heaven 
?I think I was in Heaven 
[Willow looking horrified] 
?So give me something to sing about. 
[whirls around to look at Sweet] 
?Please 
?Give me something... 

Sweet shakes his head. Buffy gives a desperate look,
turns and flips off the stage onto 
the floor. The hard-rock tune returns with the
electric guitars playing a wild riff. Buffy 
dances, faster and faster. Dawn watches in dismay.
Sweet leans forward expectantly. 

Buffy spins wildly round and round and round, smoke
begins to curl off her. 

Suddenly Spike appears, stops her by grabbing her
upper arms. Buffy gives him a 
desperate unhappy look. 

SPIKE: 
?Life's not a song 
?Life isn't bliss 
?Life is just this 
?It's living 
[brushes hair back from her face] 
?You'll get along 
[Dawn stands up] 
?The pain that you feel 
?You only can heal 
?By living 


[Buffy looks about to cry] 
?You have to go one living 
?So one of us is living.

WILLOW:
?Wait!?

All eyes turn to Willow.

SHE REPEATS: [a little quieter now.]
?Wait!?

She stands with tears in her eyes, then slowly pushes
past Tara and Xander and starts to 
climb the steps to the stage.

She puts her hand on Buffy?s arm and looks into her
eyes, opens her mouth to speak, 
then stops, a tear rolling down her cheeks. She then
turns instead to Spike, roughly 
pushing him away from Buffy. He?s shocked at her
force, but he recovers and attempts a 
sneer. 

She walks up to him and places her hand on his chest,
she sings quietly, angrily;

?And what would you know about living? 
?What have you ever known about living?

She turns and walks between him and Buffy. Her voice
is now louder, more accusing, as 
she points to Buffy

?The pain that she feels
?Makes your love seem real

Now she points back to Spike. 

?You don?t want her cured
?You don?t want her healed

?Cause she?s the only chance you?ve got 
?To pretend that you?re real
?To make believe that you?re living

?That you?re capable of giving
?That?you?re able to love her 
?You want her to suffer 
?So you can be a real boy

?Well, fly off, Peter Pan
?Build yourself another toy
??Cause she?s going to go on living
?Without you

Spike snorts and is about to retort, but Willow stares
him down. He walks a few feet 
further, dropping out of the spotlight.

Willow turns to Buffy, moving closer to her. Willow
reaches and takes her hand. 
Buffy?s chin trembles but she doesn?t cry. She?s not
ready to forgive Willow yet.

WILLOW:

?No I didn?t let you go
?And I know enough to know

?See, I did my research well
?Heaven wouldn?t have answered my spell

[Buffy looks at her with fear in her eyes. Willow
continues.] 

?I paid the full price 
?And the deal that was cast
?Would never have opened up ? Heaven

[Willow drops Buffy?s hand and walks away, then turns
back toward her, her eyes 
glistening with tears]

?I know what you thought
?But I know enough to know
?And the ticket my soul bought wasn?t for ? Heaven

[Buffy gasps, horrified]
[Everyone (except Spike and Sweet] gasps, horrified]

?See, I couldn?t let you go
?Cause the place where you were ? wasn?t Heaven

[Buffy starts to cry, her head in her hands. Willow
crosses to her, lifts her face, cradles 
her cheek, and gives her a sad, crooked smile. Willow
takes Buffy?s hands in hers and 
continues.

?One thing the dead guy is right about
?Life isn?t bliss
?You want something to sing about
?Well I?ve only got this
?Just me with no soul
?Cause I gave it for you.
?One girl in the world 

[shot of Tara, crying in Xander?s arms]
[Back to Willow and Buffy. Buffy brings their clasped
hands up to her chest. Willow 
continues.]

?So you could be whole
?In this glittering world
?For all the joy
?Life sends

[Letting go of Buffy?s hands, Willow walks toward the
steps, then turns]

?And now I can only let you go
?So you can find real reasons
?For singing
?Find the joy
?Life sends
[She turns and takes one step down, then turns back to
Buffy]

?You?ll have more seasons
?For singing
?For all the joy
?Life sends

[Buffy takes a step toward her, but she turns and
takes another step down, then turns 
back to Buffy. Willow now has a truly transcendent
smile on her face, her eyes still 
glistening but she?s no longer crying.]

?And when your time is done
?And you hear the bells ringing
?You?ll know that you?re really in ? Heaven
? ?Cause I know enough to know you?ll be in ? Heaven

BUFFY:
?Wait!? [She rushes toward the steps]

SPIKE:
?No!? [Spike rushes forward toward Buffy, but is
stopped by a searing flash of light from 
Willow, which reduces him to a pile of ash. 

[as Buffy and everyone else gasps in shock, Willow
slips out the door.]
