Nobody posted ANYTHING today?  That's...not right.

So, with 35 minutes to go, let me head into the breach, regarding a
recent topic and something I wanted to mention.

About the poll:  well, I always *wanted* Buffy to be with Willow, of
course, but as for who the damaged creature that was S7 Buffy might have
been best with, I'm gonna go off the board and say Xander.  He can give
her the peace that she needs without being pushed out by her emotional
state.  Willow would have more difficulty in a relationship that was
such a one-way street, and Gilesperhaps the only other person that
could soothe Buffy as the fractured remnant she'd been reduced to would
requirewould I think be just as thrown by Buffy's inability to
reestablish the partnership and teamwork that had marked that
relationship as Willow would be spun by the lack of the intimate
emotional connection she and Buffy had once had (and should have again,
but we're talking about S7 Buffy, and she *doesn't* have that, may even
be incapable of it now).

But with Xander, I can see a sort of quiet understanding, and if it
isn't love, it wouldn't hurt either of them that badly.

That said, none of this came to me off the top of my head;  rather, it's
something I've been pondering since I read Kyra Cullinan's excellent fic
"Five Futures Full of Alcohol and Sex".  I decided not to press for it
to be posted here, as only one of the five vignettes is Buffy/Willow,
and three of them are het, but I definitely think it's worth a read.

Of the five scenes, the only ones that hold my interest are the
Buffy/Xander and Buffy/Willow sections.  Buffy/Faith is hot, but too
shallow, and Buffy/Giles has affection, but too much weariness and pain.
As for the Buffy/Angel/Spike threesome, well, not only am I over that
sort of thing (not that I was ever particularly interested), but Buffy
should *definitely* be over itany chance she might end up with Angel
would IMO be based on their history together, not the allure of the
dark, sexy, and dead gothic sexuality.  Leave the emotionally arrested
states to the vampires;  Buffy's been there, done that, and to my mind
would certainly want more.

The Buffy/Xander scene that Kyra sketches is loving and tender and
peaceful.  I can see Buffy in that apartment in Miami, being happier
than she's been in a long while...

BUTit isn't Buffy.  The Buffy in the B/W section is.   Not sitting at
home and pretending she never was the Slayer, but going out and laughing
and touching and adventuring and loving lifeand loving Willow, which
is and has always been the exact same thing for Buffy, ever since she
walked over to that bench and decided that this was someone she wanted
in her life.  Buffy doesn't quit and retire (Miami, how...appropriate)
and curl up into a safe little ball, she wades into life with both feet
and finds the safe and happy parts and shares them with the person who
makes her the happiestfirst, last and always:  her Willow.    And
feels better for the good times because she knows how long a journey
it's been to get there. 

So yeah, Buffy can cut loose with Faith and be responsible with Giles
and be enchanted by Angel and be at peace and content with Xander

but she can only be *Buffy* with Willow.   As she was meant to be.
