Catch me if I fall
People fell in many ways. Drugs, mental illness, alcohol, broken hearts. Shattered dreams. There were a thousand routes to the gutter and mankind knew them all. People would walk by and never look, disgusted at what you had become and fearful they might join you there. Sometimes you could pull yourself up, if you had the will and the luck. Sometimes you might have a very special friend who would be there for you.
But not if you lived on the Hellmouth.
Then they were far lower places to fall.
And there was only one person who could help you then.
"Willow, have you ever kissed a boy?"
She was there, sitting in the garden, meditating. Willow walked up to her, making no attempt to hide the sound of her footsteps. She passed the place they had pitched their tent together.
"Boys?" Willow wondered why they were talking about boys. She loved spending time alone with Amy, just the two of them, away from Cordy and Harmony and all those people who made fun of her. Her only regret was that their tent was too small for Xander to join them. "Oh no, I don't like boys, they're all dirty and smelly and loud. If you kissed them you might catch something. I say all boys should be sent to Pluto! Except Xander and Jesse of course"
She opened her eyes. "Hey Will, you look much more yourself today" She took a cookie from her pocket and popped it in her mouth. Even Willow had to smile at that.
Amy pushed the plate of brownies towards her and Willow took one and bit into it. "I'd like to kiss a boy, I'd like to see what it's like"
Willow chewed and swallowed her brownie. "What do you think it is like?"
"Like this" Amy lent forwards and kissed Willow on the lips.
"They're not coming back"
"Who? The Spice Girls?"
"The Bringers. Buffy and the potentials killed all the Bringers guarding your house. The First can't protect you Amy"
Amy shrugged. If she was scared she didn't show it. "Remember how we used to camp out here when we were little? Remember what fun we had? When did it stop? When did we stop being best friends? I thought we'd always said we'd be there for one another?"
Willow was startled. "Well, I guess we really stopped hanging around when..."
"Buffy came to town"
Suddenly it was all so clear.
Willow waved to Amy as the car sped away from her house. Her mom was saying something about Agent Scully in The X-Files not having a desk and how it reflected the male domination of the portrayal of law enforcement in the media but she wasn't listening. She was waving at Amy as she stood on the front lawn of her house holding her father's hand and waving back. She kept waving until she was lost from view.
She thought about the kiss for far longer.
"Where's you dad?"
"He went away"
How fervently Willow hoped that was true.
"Where's Buffy?" Amy asked looking around her.
"Not here" Willow replied truthfully. "I asked her to give me this time to try and talk to you"
"Still there for me after all, huh? Still trying to save me?"
"If you'll let me"
"Or we could play magic?" Amy clicked her fingers, generating bright blue sparks.
"If you want" Dark clouds flickered over Willow's eyes as she steeled herself for the battle to come.
Amy shook her head. "No, today's not the day for magic. You came here to save me. To be there for me. But I want to save you, to be there for you Will. I love you Willow"
"I love you Amy"
Willow never saw the knife until it was too late. It just miraculously appeared from the folds of Amy's skirt and then it was slashing through the air towards her heart. Abruptly the front of her blouse was covered in warm sticky blood bringing back terrible memories of Warren shooting Tara. She tried to shout, to scream, to say anything but she was too far gone to make any noise. Her knee's buckled and she collapsed into Amy's welcoming arms.
The blood kept flowing, a seemingly endless river of it, staining the front of her clothes. She felt faint and sensed a tide of blackness seeking to overwhelm her. She fought against it, refusing to surrender.
"A...a...amy?" Willow gasped.
"Will" it was all Amy could seem to say.
The Bringer knife was still in Amy's hand, now hanging limply at her side. Its' blade was still clean and untarnished. Xander prised it from Amy's weakening fingers lest she should try to stab Willow in her death throes. He checked Will over carefully, making sure that none of the blood was hers, that Amy hadn't wounded her. Willow was unharmed. He'd fired quickly enough, got in first when it mattered, shot Amy before she could stab his soul mate. Only one witch was dying this day.
He'd killed Amy and saved Willow's life. It had been the only way.
So why did it feel like he was crying deep inside?
He backed off to give them some room, reapplying the safety catch to the smoking pistol; the same gun Willow had brought to the house under Amy's influence to kill Kennedy with. A dubious bonus of losing an eye was it made it a lot easier to aim when snapshooting.
He bent down and retrieved the single shell casing from the grass. The Sunnydale PD had long since fled the town along with nearly everyone else but they might be back some day and there was no sense taking risks. There were no witnesses. When Will was finished he'd put Amy's body, the gun and the knife in the house and burn it all to the ground. Later he and Willow would find an abandoned house and take a shower together for about an hour. Then they'd change into fresh clothes and he'd incinerate the b
loodstained ones by burning that house to the ground too. He'd destroy every conceivable piece of evidence. They weren't going to miss the final battle by being in jail. Not that Willow's magic couldn't get them out anyway.
Amy gurgled, bright crimson blood frothing from her mouth due to the bullet piercing her lungs. She kept trying to speak, trying to breathe but she could only manage a choking, whistling half cry, her body wracked with convulsions, shivering despite the heat of the afternoon sun. Willow clutched her to her shoulder and stroked her hair. She felt her stop shivering, the life slowly draining from Amy's body through the small bullet entrance wound in her chest and the much larger exit wound in her back. In
the last moments of Amy's life the ringing of the gunshot in her ears subsided and she heard Willow whisper to her softly.
"Its ok Amy, its ok baby, let it go. I've got you. I'm here for you"
Amy died, Willow catching her as she fell.
