Re: Fic: The Times In Between Part 1-2/?
(Ida, yeah, I was going to give fb for this yesterday, but I had to dash
to work. Sorry.)
Bob,
Very nice start there. So, I guess that "mortal wound" didn't just
vanish after all, huh? (One of many stupidities in that...thing that was
the finale.) Points to Will for noticing that Buffy was trying to pull
the suicide bit again. (Also loved "the worm's the best part!"-hee!)
I also felt Willow's pain over not visiting Tara's grave more often.
Perhaps the most revolting thing for me about the last and IMO worst
episode of the series, even more than the destruction of Buffy's
identity as the slayer (metaphor for her identity as a person throughout
most of the series), was the destruction of Sunnydale, the thing Buffy
was fighting for, her risking her life so that other people would have
lives, homes, memories, a place to work and to raise their kids.
Instead, we get Buffy turning everyone she was supposed to protect into
a refugee (and probably several hundred dead, no matter what they tried
to sell us in "Touched", because no evacuation is 100%), and we're
supposed to be *happy* about it?? (Joss and his stupid goddamn special
effects...grr.)
And within that ball of rage, perhaps the most galling thing to me is
the dropping of Tara's and Joyce's and (especially) Jenny's graves down
a sinkhole. Bye, honey! Bye, Mom! We're off to ride a bus around the
country, it'll be like "The Partridge Family", how cool! (God, the more
I think about that pustule of a finale, the more that last "oh, happy,
happy, joy" scene revolts me.)
So thanks for at least having the characters show some emotion. Puts
you one up on the hack that wrote that embarrassment. (Gee, can you
tell that ep 144in both chronology and qualityis something of a
sore point with me? Rant mode off...I hope.)
I also enjoyed the scene at the hospital with Buffy telling Faith to
find Willow. I thought the tension between the slayers was very well
addressed, and I could almost see the emotions playing across Faith's
face.
As for critiques, I only have two. First, I thought Buffy's epiphany
about her feelings for Willow was a little, well, epiphanous. I would
have bought her already knowing she was in love with Willow, but if
she's still in denial, I'm surprised it was punctured that easily.
And while I have minimal interest in both Robin Wood and his
relationship with Faith, if you're going to open the fic with everyone
so concerned about Buffy and rushing her to the hospital, I would have
appreciated at least a passing mention of the
also-run-through-with-a-sword-and-possibly-dying Wood. (Indeed, Faith's
leaving Wood after his near-death experience and joining that last happy
tableau is almost as jarring as Xander cracking jokes within a minute of
learning of Anya's death.) Nitpicky, I know, but I hate when the minor
characters just vanish without explanation.
In short (this line, not the pages above), I liked it. More, please.
