1.  Grammar 

When an adjective is used to modify "head", it becomes a compound word.
Willow is a redhead, a zit is a blackhead, Spike (once upon a time) was
a hothead, Joss is a ****head, and so on.

2.  Style

It's true that some people frown on using other descriptive terms (the
redhead, the hacker, the witch, [Buffy's] best friend/girlfriend/other
half/soulmate) to avoid having to constantly say "Willow", but IMO
that's going to far in the other direction.  The occasional descriptive
alias is okay, I feel (would we ban authors from describing Buffy as
"the Slayer"?).  Just don't overdo it.  

(But style is, almost by definition, a personal issue, anyway.)
