“I heard it was just to get in some girl’s pants.”  I think that summed it up nicely.  You’re totally right, given what we’ve seen, Spike sleeping with Buffy, the one girl Angel can’t have, is Spike’s way of getting back at Angel for stealing Drusilla.  Whom I must say was not used quite enough.
