Re: vote
Had I known my little OT email was going to spark such a debate I really wouldn't have sent it. I've allowed votenow.com emails, promotions for other lists, website announcements, etc. I really didn't see the harm in this. Go to the site or not. You didn't even have to click the link since I explained what it was in the email.
Yes, some are right that this isn't fic related. Fic comes from our imagination and our characters can be as blissful as we want them to be. They can get married, have children, own a home, cars, property, have joint bank accounts, write wills, get full access to their loved ones when they are critically sick, sign medical concent forms, etc, etc. Were we to want to take the next step - My girlfriend and I cannot do any of those things. If we stay together down the line, I cannot benefit from her Army
pension. She cannot benefit from my social security after retirement, I cannot be covered by the medical benefits given soldiers (and in turn, their SPOUSES) who have served the country after they're honorably discharged. She cannot piggy-back my medical insurance and have it cover what her benefits do not. Because our relationship is not recognized as valid by the government. Since when are human rights a political debate? Since the government decided that being of the same gender, we are not ALLOW
ED certain rights under the constitution and our relationship is not to be legally recognized. (gee, can we say election year anyone?) The same government by the way, that my girlfriend served proudly for three years. ::shrug:: I guess that just kinda pisses me off a little. In order to get 1/3 of the rights afforded straight couples, we would have to fill out stacks of paperwork for no less than 10 government agencies and pay some lawyer to do all the footwork. AND I have no guarantee of anything occ
uring in my favor. This sort of thing could take years and hundreds of dollars for us. Meanwhile, heterosexual couples are guaranteed all of these things AND 1500 other rights and privleges under the law by signing a piece of paper, and participating in a ceremony that can last no more than 5 minutes if need be. < sarcasm >Just ask Brittney Spears< / sarcasm >
By no means am I bitter toward heterosexuals. I know a few who are pretty stand up people. I'm bitter toward the government for making us do back-flips through hoops of fire in order to be recognized as an equals of Jane and John Doe down the street who got married when they were 16 just to escape their parents house.

I now return you to your politic-free regularly scheduled fanfic,
