It is *my opinion* that Joss uses the cat/Miss Kitty/Mountain Lion/Panther for the Slayer symbolism-spirituality-guide so to me it wasn't a leap to have her growl/purr.  Though, it has been pointed out many times that a human is incapable of making those sounds.  When you read about some the ancient tribes and the way they perceived the Jaguar/Panther/Cougar as a protector or a hunter of evil spirits--

 

Silent eyes peering through night passing clouds,

Hunting, stalking through air,

 in search of the soulless wonders

it wasn't a leap to make Buffy a instinctive and a primal protector of the ones she loves. To have her have a dual nature from the Slayer power and her human aspects.

 

As far as season 7 and the shadowmen in my stories the slayer will always be like the ancient myths where she is sent by God/Goddess/Creator/Higher Power to earth to protect us and the Shadowmen polluted her goodness by infecting a her with a demon.

 

Or it could be I shouldn't have read all those Nan Dibble Beauty and the Beast Fan-novels growing up. <g>

 

Anyway, I'm sure their are a bunch of people that are going to answer this better than me.  Mad Hamlet SPRINGS to mind right away.

Maybe a stupid question, but recently I've read several fics from several different authors in which Buffy purrs when she's happy or near her mate and growls when someone threatens her mate or she's in attack mode. Sometimes the Slayer is portrayed as a separate personality in these fics and sometimes not. My question is, where did this come from? I don't recall in canon Buffy ever purring or growling at any time and since it is different authors, not just one or two, using that in different stories, I was wondering if there was some kind of consensus about this.
