Re: *hug*
Would I settle??? Me-no-thinks-it's-settling!!!
Willow lay awake in her bed, her eyes red-raw from crying. Outside
the stillness of late night remained undisturbed in counterpoint to
the turmoil within her heart. Idly, her fingers roamed over her naked
flesh, and upon her dresser still smouldered the remains of a failed
spell.
So many works, so much effort contrived from ancient runes, so much
soul poured into the cantrips of love potions, and yet nothing in her
research had led her to discover the opposite: the death of feeling,
the loss of true love.
After the destruction of Sunnydale, she had parted from Buffy and
they'd both set off on separate paths, resolute in their
determination to be lost within this savage garden. Yet Willow was
unable to let go of her feelings, her needs. And despite her best
efforts, some of which were even now melting the plastic veneer of
her cheap furniture and setting fire to the tissues left behind from
previous sobbing, she still felt as strongly about Buffy as ever she
had before.

The phone rang loudly on a bedside table strewn with reference
works. A hand emerged from the ruffled duvet and groped about for the
merciless source of sleep deprivation.
"Rupert Giles," he informed the caller as he pushed himself into an
upright position. "Oh. Hello Willow."
Giles listened for awhile, before announcing his advice. "Bloody
hell!"
*
"Are you sure this is what you want to do?" Giles asked as they sat
facing each other on the bare wooden floor of the new Watchers'
Council building.
Willow chewed her lip. "I'm sure. Its in my training schedule you
drew up for me anyway. I'm just a little early."
"Five years or more early!" Giles exploded. "You may be powerful,
Willow. But that's not the same as prepared. Plus, you remember what
happened to poor Toby when he tried to help you in advanced..."
"I didn't mean it." Willow pouted.
"You set his head on fire," Giles pointed out. "Whether or not you
meant it is irrelevant."
Willow sighed. "It was only his hair. You men are too excitable."
"Nonetheless, if I feel that you're in over your head, we'll stop
this experiment."
"Okay, Giles." Willow fervently agreed. After all, she had no wish
to inflict third degree burns on poor Giles.
*
Willow opened her eyes and immediately felt dazed and confused.
"Its okay, Willow. Take your time."
"Was I gone long, Giles?"
"Not long at all, really." Giles fiddled with his glasses. "Less
than a week, which is impressive for a novice, I must say."
Willow bolted upright. "A week!"
Giles nodded. "How about we find you something to eat? You must be
sore and hungry."
"Yes, I am hungry." Willow sighed. "I have to go to her, Giles. She
needs me."
Giles gave her a blank look. "Actually, I had a call from Angel
while you were... away. He needs your help too. Why don't you tell me
more about your excursion over tea and scones, hmm?"

Buffy awoke with a scream, but there was nobody there to hear. For
a long time now she'd been secluding herself from friends, family;
everyone. She was sick of the fight and there were no shortages of
champions now to pick up the mantle and run with it.
She shook her muzzy head and tried to remember what it was that had
woken her, for long ago she'd learned to trust her instincts and try
and interpret the imagery in her dreams, for they were tools to be
used.
Willow's face. In her dream she'd been with Willow, had talked for
what seemed like hours, about everything. Everything! Buffy blushed
at some of the things she'd told Willow in her dream, things she
never could've said to her friend in person. Her real feelings.
But something had been wrong, something had caused her pain, to
scream... Something that had hurt her in her dreams...
Something that had wanted to hurt Willow.
