Radio JABAFF -- A short review.

RADIO JAABAFF, EPISODE ONE:
Starring: Mad-Hamlet, Aether, DutchPK, and HD Genscher.

Like a couple of people on BWW and WD Im guessing, I suppose I was a little
apprehensive when I heard that Da Seekrit Prajact, an undertaking shrouded
in mystery and illicit underworld dealings, was in fact going to be a radio
show.

Why?

Im not sure really. Partly because it had never been done before, and there
was no real basis for comparison in the B/W community. Partly because of the
many, many ways in which it could go wrong. Partly because&well, lets face
it, Mad-Hamlet near a keyboard alone is dangerous enough. So I was a bit
unsure. I still had some positive feelings, but being something of a natural
pessimist, I shied away until after a heavy weekend.

And promptly forgot. Shameful, I know.

It wasnt until this afternoon when MH brought up the subject of DSP that I
remembered about it. And promptly kicked myself.

The apprehension was replaced with curiosity more than anything else when I
started listening to the show, but within the space of three minutes I found
myself smiling. JAABAFF is actually incredibly well put together. HD
Genscher, Aether and the lovely Dutch along with MH have a great dynamic, in
my view. It was a little forced at times, with the slight feeling of
predictability and scriptishness (the gods of English will smite me soon),
but after the 12-step jibe, it really loosened up. I suppose part of me was
still feeling a bit reluctant to get into it, once Id got past the novelty
of actually hearing everyones voices, but the comments were intelligent and
thoughtful, the humour humorous, and the tequila straight (?).

It was cool to hear how everyone got into the B/W fandom - the
self-interviewing was a good idea, so much in the way of kudos for that. I
also enjoyed listening to everyones favourite authors and stories, and Ive
got more than a couple on my to-read list that I hadnt found before, or
realised that I HAVE to re-read.

There were a couple of slight problems though, if understandable ones. At
times, the dialogue tended to slow, or break briefly. Considering the pace
of some of the parts, especially towards the end, it did take a bit of the
spice out of it. Also, Dutchs microphone seemed to have an echo effect on
it at parts, so that got a little irritating (but didnt detract from what
she was saying, obviously). One of the minor problems I thought was that not
enough went on in the show. It was great that you guys went into the detail
you did, and got some really good interaction going, but it would have been
nice to have some more sections to the episode.

Despite a few of these technical difficulties, however, I was very
pleasantly surprised by JAABAFF. Mad-Hamlet and the crew made me laugh out
loud more than once, especially when discussing ships! It was extremely
well run, funny, and insightful at times. The review of Mikes fic was also
brilliant, and helpful to all authors, not just Mike himself.
So yeah, its all very cool. Congratulations to the JAABAFF crew for pulling
it off and giving this to the community. Im eagerly, eagerly awaiting the
next part. I mean, really. Ive even started going to this 12-step thing&

Cheers,

- Jamie.
