The only time I ever noticed it was at the end of What's My Line,
Part 2 (with the animal crackers), but I remember someone (probably
Joss) saying that they'd had a lot of people speculating that there was
some deep significance to that and, no, the prop guy just put them in
wrong.

So maybe they just kept doing it, as an in-joke. Mid-S2 seems to have been a big time for that (note the two shout-outs to the posting board in Bad Eggs, for example).
