To put in my 2 cents here, Giles was a authority figure for buffy in 
the first 2, possibly 3 seasons. Most in season 1, diminishing from 
thereon out. She didnt want to be the slayer, she didnt want to be 
training to be the slayer, she certainly didnt want to patrolling 
every night and ruining her social life and having her mother mad at 
her all the time.  Yet she did it, and that was mainly due to Giles 
pushing her. If that doesnt cover as a authorithy figure, then i dont 
know what does. Buffy never did act all respectful towards him(like 
Kendra did), but nonetheless, she followed his orders, did what he 
said(albeit grudgeingly).  I think thats what makes people(me 
included) go ick at that relationship aswell.  Same way i would go ick 
if a highschool teacher had an affair with a student, or a doctor had 
an affair with a patient.. Well you get the idea(i hope).

I really dont think ages have all that much to do with it. Sure.. Anya 
was 1000 years+ old, but she behaved like a spoiled brat.  If she had 
behaved like she had actually learned something(other than 1001 ways 
of maiming men) during those years, and were acting her age, i would 
have had a problem with that relationship aswell. But that is not how 
she was as at all.

Same thing with the Buffy/Angel relationship really. Angel is not the 
distinguished elder gentleman taking buffy under his wing. When they 
start the relationship, he is a wimp hiding from just about anything, 
not daring to take a real stand against evil, and he relies just as 
much on her help as she does on him. Now.. i might not like that 
relationship all that well anyway, but the age difference is not what 
makes it crash and burn for me.
