running to Spike before things got ugly?  Would he start singing, and 
what would he have to say?

Willow's wrong path is more troublesome, cuz her magic problems and 
insecurity won't go away. Her path to world destruction was needed to 
enable her to get her back on the right track. The same for Xander. 
I'm convinced that Xander would still walk away from the altar. The 
problem between him and Anya is not only in Xander's background with 
his father. That was mostly the trigger. The problem is more in 
Anya's background as her being an ex-vengeance demon. The fact that 
she became a vengeance demon again and never had really changed in 
her way as a demon, is what worries Xander so much and might lead to 
hit his wife. Note his line in OMWF: "Am I marrying a demon?"

If Lorne would tell him that that would happen when he'd not marry 
her, his worst fears would only be confirmed. And thus he wouldn't 
marry her. Lorne, as being a demon, could have helped them of course 
by giving advise. But, that said, if Anya would have survived, I have 
no doubt that they would have got together again. Anya has made 
consideral progress and Xander noticed it; and they still loved each 
other. Just like with Willow and her magic problems it was, very 
sadly, necessary. If only they could prevent Tara's death or bring 
her back. Maybe a, uhm, wish from Buffy, Joss?
