Re: Spreading B/W was -> Mad Hamlet's post

Greetings,

I understand your intentions here Mad-Hamlet, but are you sure this is a
good idea and not part of the problem?

I am absolutely ten-thousand percent positive it is a good idea, Tater.
Let's do this by the numbers.

Well, clearly we are going to have to agree to disagree on this. You have valid reasons for doing it your way, I have what I consider valid reasons for not wanting to do it that way, I don't think either of us is going to convince the other. That said, I'm going to attempt to rebutt a couple of your points anyway, just because my semi-annual urge to post has not gone away yet.

On the one hand we have a YahooList that is multi-topic. Stories are posted,
conversations are begun and left to linger, jokes, off-topic posts, on-topic
posts, other work the BtVS stars are doing (Specifically SMG and AH). There's
a whole lot of topics swimming around in here and you advocate the adding of
something else yet again to that mix rather than a small, isolated location
that in one of its sub-sections, is solely devoted to this project.
No post searching, no cross-topics, very little confusion and the possibility
of private messaging.

This would really be more of an issue if there were more traffic on the list. Currently, there's pretty much two threads, this one, and the other one about ships that was also started by your rant.

By spinning off subtopics to another
forum, you may be missing out on people who might not be interested enough at
first to go join the other forum, but would later see something in the
discussion that would catch their attention and prompt them to participate.

If a member of The BWW is unwilling to take the extra three seconds out of
their busy afternoon to post on a forum even as a guest, thereby avoiding
certain inherent risks in a multi-topic list, then they are the target of the
original rant. Which if you refer to states very clearly that I have no
delusions of drawing lurkers out.

It's not the three seconds to post that is the problem. It's remembering to go over and check yet another forum in a long list of lists and forums that people check daily. My own daily net activity goes something like this: start email downloading, check TTH, check three different sections of Fanfic.net, check Passion and Perfection, check Ironworks, check SVUfiction.com, check Wandererverse, read the email, go back and start actually reading things on each site that I'm inerested in that I've put up in their own windows. So far today I've only gotten as far as checking TTH. That alone generated seven browser windows that I intend to go back and read. I'm not going to get far enough down the list today to add checking Wiffy to see if the discussion on spreading B/W has gone anywhere. The discussion on the list, that is in my email, I've already read, because email is already at the top of the list of things to do on the net. I've simply reached my limit on how many forums and websites I can monitor daily.

I am willing to run that risk Tater since the subsequent spin off of that
rant, the 'conversation' about it here on the BWW has, barring very few
exceptions been done by the current 'Core' of active BWW members I referred to
in the rant, not lurkers.

So the few exceptions are not reason enough for you. I disagree with that. I think every time you manage to draw one person who rarely or never posts into a conversation, you have made progress. I'm not saying you're going to get hordes of lurkers to come out of the woodwork, I'm saying you might get one. Then you might get another one with the next thread, and another with the next. Even glaciers get somewhere eventually.

Personally, I would read this discussion thread about spreading B/W if it
occurred on this list,

There would/will be regular updates on links received, suggestions made on the
Wiffy-Forum to the BWW of course.

Okay, that's better than the discussion simply dissappearing from BWW.

but I'm not going to check a new forum to read it.

Your prerogative.

I'm simply too overloaded.

I may not ever have anything to contribute to the discussion, but if I did,
you've lost it. You may have also lost someone else who'd have a really good
idea.

Your Damoclesian threat is duly noted. Being the bastion of mental, emotional
and intellectual fortitude that I am sure I'll survive.

That wasn't really intended as any kind of threat. It was more of an observation that with over 1,500 people on a list, you never know which dicussion, comment, or random off-topic remark will catch someone's interest, spark an idea, or even mutate into the muse that births an epic. Yes the possiblitly is remote, it is most likely to never happen. But why throw away the possibility?

Either way the forum is up, and two general ff-archives have been given by a
guest (thanks Mr (ms?) Mystery Guest)

Passion and Perfection: http://www.ralst.com/index.html

Silverlake: http://www.imjustsayin.net/silverlake/index.html

So if you have B/W fics to post, members of the BWW can post them there.

Okay, the seperate forum is working. You're getting suggestions. That I can't argue with. I wish you well with it. In the end, anything that breathes a bit more life into B/W fandom is a good thing.

Heck, I'll even throw in a suggestion of my own for places to post fic: http://www.femslash.net/
