I don't know... For me it's with "the I in team" that Willow's
relationship's with Tara becomes serious. Will is tired of being
ignored
by Buffy (already happened with Faith in season 3) and goes to Tara who
is all over her. At the end of the episode, she finally accepts the
doll's eye crystal she refused earlier when she was still trying to get
Buffy to "notice" her.
It's a question of "OK, Buffy doesn't want me, so I'll go to somebody
who actually likes being with me."
It's doesn't mean her feelings for Buffy disappear and, if I were Tara,
I would have questioned Willow's motives for bringing back Buffy at the
beginning of season 6.
For me Willow/Tara is sort of a validation of Willow's feelings for
Buffy (and I do like Tara and W/T). Too bad Buffy believes she's
straight.
(OK, I'm rewatching season 4 ;-))
But, they kept making a point (especially from New Moon Rising,
onward) of stressing that Willow had never felt any attraction or
romantic feelings for girls before Tara, and constantly beat it into
the viewers' heads that Tara was Willow's soulmate. NMR set
everything on the show in stone (also making a point of establishing
Buffy's complete straightness, something that had been very ambiguous
over the course of the previous year and a half), and the rest of the
series went from there, to the point of even having Willow making that
"I'm a breast girl" comment. Um, Will, Buffy's standing right there.
Not your most sensitive moment...
Then, right at the beginning of S5, came Dawn, who immediately took
over Willow's old role in Buffy's life, getting all the protectiveness
and affection that Buffy had previously given Willow.
So, after NMR, it wasn't impossible to ship Buffy and Willow, but it
was a lot harder than before, and you're not going to find much
inpiration to work from with the last 3 1/2 seasons. You pretty well
need the first 3 1/2 to get any feel that Buffy was ever anything more
than Second Best Friend After Xander from Willow. Buffy, for her
part, was as caring and affectionate as circumstances would allow, and
completely forgiving, loving Willow unconditionally. They even made a
point of bringing up "gaydar" during the last season, eye contact,
body language, etc, to explain why Willow never thought of Buffy that
way, but Sarah (bless her)kept subverting that, kept doing the same
things she'd done all through the series, especially the eye contact
part. Even Faith knew how to "play" Buffy with Willow. :)
