Your message concerning the enforcement efforts by the Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. relating to its rating trademarks was forwarded to me. 

As you are no doubt aware, the MPAA is the owner of all trademark rights in the rating symbols and designations used in connection with the motion picture rating system for over 30 years.  These rating symbols include: G, PG, PG-13, R and NC-17.  These marks may only be used by permission and authority of the MPAA and only in connection with motion pictures rated by the Classification and Rating Administration.

We have consistently taken action against the unauthorized use of the ratings.  The use of the MPAA’s rating marks for materials not rated by the MPAA is completely without authorization of the MPAA and constitutes trademark infringement. 

Any proposed alternative system for classifying the age-appropriateness of material not rated by the MPAA should not use the MPAA marks or confusingly similar designs.
