Has this spread beyond the original recipient? Last I heard only one person had received a 'Cease and Desist' from the MPAA. And admitted it. There are a few 'a friend of a friend got one' reports without proof. And still no reports in the media (It's been a month or so). But I haven't heard of any archive sites getting one... it's always possible that someone (publisher, producer, content company, IP owner) was offended at a specific instance or two of fan fiction based on their works and used the MPAA as a way of shutting them down.

Some people are doing things, others are waiting to see if this is real and not an attack against a specific writer or two made to look like it's from the MPAA.

Personally, I'm gradually going thru the 2 dozen stories on my blog and removing any direct MPAA rating-like reference. I've already done that for my stories on 'Twisting the Hellmouth' (as requested by the archive maintainer, Jinni) and eventually I'll do the same thing at Ikoly.

The MPAA ratings are too broad anyway... so we should probably have some sort of independent rating system that is more appropriate to fan fiction. We seem to use NC-17 just to mean "sex and lots of it" or "lots of non-mainstream sex (S&M, BDSM, etc)" while R gets the "Tons of violence and death" around here.

I don't think there is any issue (yet) with using the British, Canadian, or Australian ratings systems... I believe those are all government created.
Something to think about.
