Re: 'Teacher's Pet' Discussion
Hello Everybody!
This week's episode, "Teacher's Pet."
Canon Cop Facts:
Willow's last name is Rosenberg. Not mentioned until this point. Her Jewish heritage still hasn't been established yet, but the name's an indicator.
It's Alexander LaVelle Harris. Just so you know.
General stuff:
Okay, the rubber she-mantis was hokey as all get out. Too big and lumbering to be really threatening. And the premise was flawed. She's an insect but she needs human DNA to procreate? How's that supposed to work, anyway? A six-foot mantis is unlikely to actually arouse any guy. And this is mating, the male arousal and response is necessary for fertilization of her eggs. How many guys can get it up to the sight of an egg spewing bug, even if they don't know it's a death sentence to do so? Maybe I'm callous and strange, but any guy who finds that erotic *needs* to be removed from the gene pool.
On a down note, Buffy starts to respond to Angel in this episode. Damn! Maybe she's finally decided that Willow isn't getting over her Xander fixation any time soon, so she's moved on to easier pickings. Maybe someone could write a fic off that. A heart-to-heart chat with Willow about accepting Angel's pursuit, since the someone she's interested in seems to have no interest in return. This could get brainy Willow curious so she sets out to discover in whom it was that Buffy was interested, purely for the benefit of her new best friend, of course. Could she figure it out? If so, what happens then? Could be a quick PWP or build over the next few episodes into major WAFF.
I had been being critical of season seven Buffy being an untrained general. But looking at first season Buffy again, she's very take-charge-girl. "Willow, do this; Xander, do that; Giles, go do the other thing." Quite commanding. How could Willow resist? And her ideas are good in the first season. She uses the information that Giles and Willow provide effectively, creates well thought out plans, and executes them. The problem in season seven is she's not as well written. If these writers had done it, she wouldn't have come across as so incompetent.
'Shippy Stuff:
Just a side note, 'shippy includes a friendship as well as a more romantic relationship. So, yeah, not everything that I or anyone else mentions is necessarily a prelude to a quickie in the janitor's closet. Some of it will be the deep friendship stuff that we think could and should lead to something deeper.
When Dr. Gregory asked Buffy a question in class, Willow was quick to help. Now, she's a big nerd still--not trying to be insulting, that's her character--and future salutatorians normally don't help other's cheat! So it's very 'shippy that she helped Buffy in class. I wonder how many times she's played charades in class for Xander's benefit?
When Xander proposed a publicly visible triad of himself, Willow, and Buffy, Willow was all for it. Sure, threesomes aren't what we're looking for here, but it's darn close! Actually, someone once wrote a threesome story that started from this very episode but, sadly, it didn't have a Wiffy happy ending. Drat!
And on a slashy, if not femslashy, note, Xander sure noticed Angel. You're average sixteen-year-old boy isn't normally so...complimentary about another male's appearance.
Okay, big minus for wearing Angel's jacket to school...in the sun...in southern California. But still, she sits *right* next to Willow, shoulder to shoulder, hip to hip. When Xander goes into pathetic-mode, the two girls exchange a look. And what a fun look it is. Their eyes meet, then *in unison* they look at each other's lips. It's encouraging to our viewpoint! They stay in sync for the rest of the scene as well. They shrug at Xander at the same time, turn and smile at each other at the same time. I took me years to reach that level of simpatico with my best friend. Very 'shippy.
"Wasn't here. Didn't see it. Couldn't have stopped you."
I love denial-Giles.
Your fellow 'shipper,

They met again and quickly the kiss grew steamier. Willow's hands began to roam across Buffy's back as Buffy entwined her fingers in Willow's hair. Time stretched as the embrace grew more passionate. The girls broke the kiss but didn't separate, just leaned their foreheads together and panted.
"Wow. That was..." Buffy took a deep breath. "You sure you never?"
"Uh uh. I was just following your lead."
