Actually, the concept behind Faith was "The road not 
taken".  "Different circumstances, that could be me", as Buffy put 
it. 

I do wonder if that was originally Tara's role with Willow.  The 
original plan had been to keep things subtextual, "like Buffy and 
Faith".  I did notice that, as Willow became more confidant and 
outgoing, a lot of her old personality traits seemed magnified in 
Tara.
