Chapter 1

A young woman in snug black pants and a leather jacket was walking
through one of the cemetaries in Sunnydale seemingly lost in thought.
She was just passing one of the mausoleums when a man in his thirties
came from behind a tree. The girl stoppped a few feet from the man.

"Well, well, what's a nice little slayer like you doing in a cemetary
like this?" the man said with a smirk.

"Ooh, you're just a funny one aren't ya?" Buffy said without a hint of
humour in her voice or face.

"Many have said so, but I guess you can't please everyone," the vampire
said switching to game face. "Enough talking now though, I'm in a mood
for a good fight and some blood!"

The vampire attacked Buffy with a kick that she dodged easily.

"You're really gonna have to do better than that if you want to beat me"
the slayer said with a grin.

The vampire just growled and attacked the slayer again with more kicks
and punches which Buffy blocked with a few hits of her of own. Buffy
decided that since it had been a slow night she'd take a little longer
with dusting the vampire to get some excercise from the fighting. She
kicked and punched just hard enough to hurt the vampire but still keep
it in fighting condition.

The small forest was lit by the moon shining brightly from the sky. The
creature walked cautiously through some thicker parts of undergrowth
keeping senses alert for any unusual signs. After a while the
surroundings became more open and it knew it was close to humans. It
crept closer to the edge of the forest when suddenly it stopped to
listen. There were sounds of fighting coming from ahead. The creature
sniffed the air. There was something about the smell it sensed,
something....familiar.

It started jogging towards the sounds and the familiar smell. It didn't
have to go far before it was very close to the fight, watching it from
the cover of the bushes. There was a man and a woman fighting in the
middle of the cemetary. The creature sensed that the familiar smell was
coming from the female. It stood still watching what would happen.

Buffy had been fighting with the vampire for a good half an hour and was
getting a little bored with it. While avoiding a kick aimed for her head
she pulled a stake from her pocket and used the opening caused by the
kick to slam it into the heart of the vampire. The vampire blew up in a
puff of dust and some of the dust landed on Buffy.

"I really hate it when they blow their dust on me..." the slayer
grumbled while brushing the dust from her jacket.

"I wouldn't worry much about that," said a voice behind her, "you'll be
dead soon anyway."

Buffy whirled around to see four vampires standing in a semi-circle
around her. How didn't I hear them approaching?

She masked her surprise and said coolly, "Yeah, that's what they all
say, but guess what? They're always wrong."

The leader laughed "Well, you hadn't met us before. You might just be
surprised at what we're capable of."

As soon as he had finished speaking Buffy was hit from behind with a
baseball bat. She fell to the ground with her head spinning hoping that
she didn't black out. Her vision was blurry and she tried to keep
conscious.

The vampires started to get closer to the slayer when suddenly they
heard a howl from behind. They turned to look around only to see a seven
feet tall red werewolf charging towards them. By the time they snapped
out of their shock enogh to try to escape the beast had reached them.

It had seen the woman dusting the vampire and the other four creeping up
behind her. It hadn't seen or sensed the one that was hiding until the
perfect time to hit the woman. As the creature saw the familiar smelling
female fall down something inside it flared. It grew in shape and size
while the anger inside it grew.

The werewolf started to run towards the vampires with a howl filled with
rage. The frozen vampires stared at it for a a little while until they
snapped out of their haze. They started to run but it was too late. The
wolf ran first to the vampire that had hit the woman and snapped it's
neck easily. Three more were destroyed in a similar fashion until only
one that was left was the leader.

Buffy had heard the howl and looked towards the red blur that was coming
towards them. She tried to squint to see better but it was of no use,
her head was still swimming from the blow. Buffy tried to get up from
her sitting position but that didn't work either so she could do nothing
but watch as the red blur that she had guessed to be a werewolf went
after the vampires.

While the wolf ripped vampires apart she started to blink rapidly as she
noticed that her eyesight was getting a little better. By the time the
werewolf had killed all the vampires her eyesight had gotten back to
normal and her head didn't swim anymore, but it did hurt though. As she
saw the beast starting towards her she quickly rose to her feet.

Buffy stood ready to fight the werewolf but to her surprise it stopped a
few feet in front of her and shifted into a normal looking wolf, only
red in color. It didn't seem to be aggressive anymore, just the
opposite. The wolf had sat down after transforming and just watched her
as if to ask what now.

Buffy was stunned. Why didn't it attack me? It didn't make sense that it
killed only the vampires... It was as if... as if it had 'protected' me.
But that wasn't possible, was it? And how did it change into a normal
looking wolf? And why was it red? Buffy's mind was spinning with
guestions and she decided to go to Giles' place and ask him about this
strange new creature.

Buffy started to back away from the wolf slowly not trusting it not to
attack her. As she had gone a few feet the wolf stood up and followed
her. Buffy was ready to fight it if it attacked her but it didn't seem
to be aggressive. She continued to back up for a while watching the wolf
follow her until she just decided to turn around and walk forwards with
the wolf right behind her.

They kept walking through the town with Buffy glancing at the following
wolf every once in a while. The wolf had been getting a little closer to
her throughout the walk and by the time they were at Giles' place it was
walking beside Buffy. Buffy had decided to let the wolf get closer
because it didn't seem to be dangerous, to her at least.

When they were in front of Giles' door Buffy decided to try something.
She turned towards the wolf and slowly reached with her hand. The wolf
just stood there watching Buffy with interest in it's dark green eyes.

Buffy's hand slowly met with the wolf's fur on the side of it's head. It
was a lot softer than Buffy would have imagined, it was almost silky. At
first she just kept her hand on the wolf but soon started to pet it
slowly. The wolf sat down to enjoy the affection by this human, panting
softly.

Buffy was amazed. The wolf had let her touch it and it seemed to enjoy
the stroking. Wow! This really is something new! This is amazing! I
gotta tell Giles! Buffy used her other hand to knock on Giles' door
while still petting the animal with the other. By now she was almost
certain that this wasn't your normal 'kill all' werewolf, but a more
gentle and more... human version of a werewolf.

Giles opened his door to see Buffy standing there. "Oh, Buffy i-it's
you. I wasn't expecting you back from Los Angeles until tomorrow. But
now that you're here we need to discuss something that came up while you
were away." Giles said while opening the door wider and gesturing Buffy
to come in.

Buffy forgot about the wolf for a while and stared at Giles with a
raised eyebrow. "'Hello Buffy! It's nice to see you. How was your
vacation?' 'Hello Giles, it's nice to see you too and my trip was
great!'" this all said with a slightly sarcastic tone.

Giles looked a little embarrassed at this and said, "W-well... I am
sorry. It really is good to see you back". While saying this he cleaned
his glasses and now put them back on. Just then he noticed the wolf
beside Buffy, partly hidden by the doorway. "B-Buffy, wh-what is THAT?"

"Oh, this? Well this is the reason I came to see you tonight... To ask
you the same question." Buffy said and walked past Giles inside the
house and to his livingroom. The wolf followed Buffy and as Buffy sat
down on the sofa, it jumped on it to sit beside Buffy.

Giles stood shocked at the doorway for a while until he shook his head
to clear it a bit. He then closed the door and followed Buffy to the
livingroom. He stood by a chair farthest from the sofa. ".....W-well, I
don't quite know what to say. So why don't you tell me how...or, or why
that thing is with you?"

Buffy sat comfortably on the sofa and glanced at the wolf before looking
at Giles and replying, "I guess I better start from the beginning... Ok,
so I got back from LA a couple of hours ago and thought it'd be too late
to call Xander or Willow," The wolf's ears perked at the names. "but I
was restless so I decided to go on patrol. It was pretty calm and I
staked a fresh vampire half way through the cemetary. I don't know why I
didn't hear the other vamps creeping up behind me but suddenly there
were four of them around me."

By this point the wolf had laid down next to Buffy and put it's head on
the slayer's lap. It was a safe and warm place.

"Anyway, while I was talking to the leader a fifth vamp snuck behind me
and whacked me with a baseball bat. I fell down, my head was swimming
and my vision got all blurry. Suddenly I hear a howl and see some
reddish blur come towards me and the vamps and next thing I know there's
no vampires around. I got my vision back and my head stopped spinning,
much, and I see a big werewolf in front of me and it looked a little bit
same as those movie werewolves and not like those that I usually see
here on the hellmouth. So I was ready to fight it when it changed into
this wolf form and just looked at me, you know, and then I started
backing up and it follows me. I decided to come here and it followed
me... Aaand I'll stop babbling now."

Buffy finished speaking and looked a little embarrassed. She started
petting the wolf's head while waiting for Giles to process all she'd
told.

Giles looked at Buffy and the wolf lying beside her. "I see. Although I
can see that it doesn't seem aggressive towards you, how can you be
certain that it won't attack you later?"

"I can't 100 percent sure, but I have a feeling that she won't hurt me.
Her actions tonight have pretty much proven it." Buffy answered while
petting the wolf that was relaxed but still very aware of it's
surroundings.

"She?" Giles asked finally sitting down on the chair.

Buffy looked a little embarrased, "Well, I didn't see any...uhm... male
equipment so I thought... And, well... It's just this feeling I got."

Giles coughed a little and started to clean his glasses. "Right. Well,
it, it seems that we have to do a bit of research tomorrow to find out
more about this wolf. We should meet in the library in the morning and
tell the others about this situation."

Buffy started to get up but then she remembered something and sat back
down. The wolf sensed that they were soon leaving so she hopped to sit
on the floor by the slayer's feet. "Giles, when I came here you said
that something came up while I was gone?" Buffy asked.

Giles got up to pace in front of Buffy, "Yes, it's a bit of an odd thing
that started two days ago. We have noticed that the vampire population
has seemed to get smaller in the past two days, which is odd since you
weren't here. I have tried to search the books but nothing in them
points to reducing vampire population before any demonic or apocalyptic
event. Although it seems like a good thing, I can't help but feel a bit
reserved about it."

"It does seem a bit strange but I take it as a good thing. Maybe we
should research that too tomorrow. Too bad that Wills is at the computer
camp, we could use her help." Buffy said and stood up. "Well, I think
it's time for me to go home so I can get some sleep... Been a long day."
She started walking to the door with the wolf right behind her.

Giles walked them to the door and asked, "What are you going to do with
the wolf?". Buffy turned to look at Giles. "I hadn't really thought
about that..." She looked at the wolf next to her and made a decision.
"I guess I'll take her home with me for now. I'm glad that mom is at
some art conference in NY for a week, or she'd freak out if she saw
Red." The wolf wagged her tail as if she knew they were talking about
her.

The watcher raised his eyebrow, "Red?"

Buffy grinned as she opened the door. "Yep, that's what I'm gonna call
her! Goodnight, Giles, see you tomorrow!", she said while walking out
the door with a red wolf by her side.

Giles just shook his head and said, "Goodnight, Buffy.", before closing
the door.

The wolf walked beside Buffy the whole walk to Buffy's house. She had
sensed that there was something familiar about the man, Giles, they went
to see. Also the names that Buffy had said were somehow familiar. There
was something....something that she should remember. She just couldn't
figure out what it could be.

She would be content to be with this woman for now, though, and try to
figure things out later.
