Okay, Ray you have made good points, but (Don't you just hate that word?)
you've over generalising the points.

The council can be good or bad. Making it bad gives a faceless enemy to
bash. They could be the good guys and get bashed and forced to get Buffy to
work for them again. They just don't know how to ask.

The former lovers might be great in bed or not. There's fun to be had there
;) Riley for example could brake up with Buffy simple because he's in the
army. Leaving say Willow to pick up the pieces.

It's all up to the author. Being a writer I enjoy dealing with the
possibilities.
