I am rather new to the list and love all that I have read so far and am working on my own Buffy/Willow stories.  This topic is one I have been
heatedly debation with my life partner.  I am sure that for the most part everyone would love to see BTVS take the same direction as was takne in XWP. We would all love to see the subtext become richer more obvious.  I know that I would.  I love the Willow and Tara thing too. I think it all works well.  Willow is obviously experiencing something and I believe that what she is experiencing is " The Bargining".  Perhaps all that Willow had to do, all the power she had to harness and channel to bring Buffy back was a bargin of sorts.  I know that seeing Willow kill the beautiful deer was rather upsetting in so much that it was totally out of character for the Willow we have known up to now.  I feel that Willow had to give up something and accep t something to bring her cheirshed frined back.  All she did was done because of the love she has for Buffy and the void she felt after Buffy's death.  Perhaps we are seeing more deeply into Willow.  Some might question, What drove Willow to such extremes?  Could it be that her true feelings for Buffy were her motivations even if she was/is unconsciously aware of them. Could it be that instead of facing her true emotion, Willow has focused on the magic. Thus, she unconsciously pushes Tara out of the picture and at the same time unconscioulsy denying her feelings for the slayer and pusing her away with all the magic usage.
I have made no conclusions or decisions on what I think about Buffy's being darker. But I do think that anyone who has gone through what she has would be a bit darker and more serious. As for Spike that story started before the end of last season and has been a teaser for some time.  Having sex with Spike is a safety net for Buffy. It gives her a chance for physical affection and sensation without the emotional commitment a relationship with another human would need. Spike is more of a convienence for her but I don't even think Buffy knows that yet. Spike for all his vampireness is a "good guy" deep down. I don't believe that he no longer has no soul. I believe he does have a soul and we are seeing it more and more.
What concerns me is Willow/ Buffy/ Tara.  I hope that Buffy sees that Willow needs help much like Angel needed help, Dawn was given to her to protect, etc.  Willow needs Buffy to heal and learn control. I just hope Buffy is up to the job. I hope she can put aside the slayer for a little while and give the friend that loves her totally and unconditionally the help, love, and friendship she needs.
Thank you
Payne
