Re: Anneke (micro-vague spoiler for 7.1)
We may forgive and forget what Willow did...but Buffy won't.
Precisely why I hated the "evil Willow" concept since the second I heard
about it. Well, that and the "gee, that's not TOO like Angelus, is it?"
response I had.
I mean, what "romance" can we look forward to know? "I love you,
Willow, but how can I ever trust you after what you did?" and "You're
right, Buffy, you shouldn't love meI can't get rid of the magic and I
can't control it, either" and "I try not to love you, but I can't help
it!" and all that goddamn Buffy-and-Angel crap that drove me so nuts
back in Season 3. (This is all my personal reaction, obviously. If you
enjoyed it, great.)
All that gnashing and wailing and "I know it's wrong but I can't help my
dark passions" yadayadayada helpless twisted lovewhatever. Meanwhile
I'm just going "oh, come on, date Xander! He loves you and you wouldn't
have to go through this drek if you weren't, you know, DATING A FRICKING
VAMPIRE!"
And dammit, for me, Buffy/Willow is supposed to be the opposite of that
junk, the **antidote** to it. Love being about keeping you "safe and
warm" and being "with [your] best friend forever" and all those other
lovely words Kirshner put in Anya's mouth. Love based on bonds of
connection and trust, on knowing someone who knows you better than you
know yourself, on finding the other half of your soul, not some
self-destructive urge for a dark, mysterious stranger. And now they've
ruined that, turned Willow into the very thing she was meant to be the
opposite of.
If I were Buffy, I don't know why I'd bother with Willow (or Spike, for
that matter)if I need a tortured, forbidden love, I might as well go
back to Angel, and then if it works out, I'll at least have proven that
I **wasn't** being an idiot by falling for him back in the day.
The way they made sure to get blood on **everybody's** hands last year
(excepting of course the martyred St. Tara the Pure) was doubtless an
attempt to quell opposition to B/S, and it's certainly done a wonderful
job of wrecking all the other ships. How can we argue that Buffy should
be with Willow, or with "I'm going to run away and blame you for it"
Giles, or "I summoned a demon and killed people" (tell your damn musical
to shut up, Joss!) Xander? About the only 'ship left based on Buffy
hooking up with a decent human being who cares for her is Buffy and
Dawn, which I can enjoy in a fic if it's done as "kinky fun between
consenting adults" but to argue for it as a canon pairing squicks me
overly.
I guess logically, what I should do is get back on the B/X 'ship and
start arguing that Xander didn't summon Sweet, he was only covering for
Dawn (as you can in fact interpret his subsequent actions in "Gone",
"Older and Far Away" and "Grave" to show). But, dammit, I still want
Buffy and Willow, too.
Here comes that micro-spoiler that I'm vaguing up:
There was a moment in the premiere where people who weren't spoiled for
it had a brief thought that maybe Warren hadn't been murdered after all.
Would that I had been unspoiled and could have enjoyed it, too. I would
have treasured the memory of those few seconds like I treasure the
commercial break after Act 3 of "As You Were", when I was thinking
"whoa! So Spike's been evil all this time, dealing demon eggs behind
Buffy's back? What a clever plot twist! There's hope for the show
after all." Granted, we came back from the ads to find out that Spike's
sin was a once-off that he'd only started recently and that Spike has
been retconned into being too "incompetent" to believe so Buffy can
freely screw his cold dead cock to her heart's (or other body part's)
desire, but for a few minutes, I had joy.
Would have loved to have had it again. Doubt I ever will, from this
show.
Dan
whole lotta bitter goin' on...
