As I recall, the final scenes of Becoming 2 (backed by the lovely voice of Sarah McLachlan) went directly from Buffy running the sword through Angel's midsection to Buffy watching as the Scoobs met outside the school, just before her bus to LA pulled up.

I've read at least one short fic at fanfiction.net (before it became Spuffyfic.net :-P) (Bitter? Oh, a tad...) which essentially was the note Buffy left behind.  I think the final paragraph went something like; "You told me not to bother coming back.  Don't worry, I won't."

There was one thing that kinda bugged me about Season 3.  While I see why Joyce was upset by Buffy's running away, she seemed to conveniently forget her outburst before Buffy left to confront Angelus.  One of my favorite non-shipper fics out there is one called 'Becoming Lois Lane', in which Xander, Cordy and Giles visited Joyce to ask where Buffy was, just after Buffy had run away.  Very well handled bit of angst and introspection, with Joyce comparing herself to Lois Lane, blissfully unaware that her da
ughter was a super-hero.  I think you can find it at the Joyce Fanfic page, joyffa.com.
