~*~

She looked down at the head of red hair resting comfortably against her
shoulder. Willow had quickly fallen asleep once theyd started their
drive to L.A. Buffy smiled as she remembered her fathers confused
reaction as hed seen Willow wearing her own clothing instead of
Cordelias. Buffy herself found that she kinda missed how her friend had
looked in leather and the tight top but stopped those thoughts as soon
as they tried to climb out of her sub-consciousness. Unfortunately the
pink skirt and yellow top Willow had chosen instead did equal things to
the slayers thoughts and Buffy was soon running out of other things to
think about.
Ill never understand how she manages to wear pink with yellow and
still look sexy, the thought stole through Buffys mental defences and
she groaned inwardly. Great, one willow-kiss has turned me into
Xander. And that was just the thing; Buffy had kissed Willow.
She remembered the time shed spent as a vampire. The horrible ordeal of
digging through earth to leave her grave.
Buffy shuddered at the memory and, without waking, Willow snuggled
closer and hugged the wigged slayer around the waist. Buffy smiled.
Her vampire self had sought out Willow and bit her as vampires do& she
remembered how the blood of her friend tasted, how sweet her lips
tasted, how she smelled afraid and aroused by VampBuffys actions.
This time she shuddered for throughoutly different reasons. She shook
her head in an attempt to clear it before all her thoughts would need an
R-rating.
So dad, what are we gonna do once were in L.A.? She hoped a
conversation with her father would further distract her and immediately
felt guilty about it; using him like that instead of just wanting to
talk to him.
Well, if its all right with the two of you were gonna stop by my
place first. We can unload your bags and see if I have enough blankets,
stuff you guys like for breakfast and such things. Im afraid Im not
prepared for two people to stay over night. Are you two okay to share
the bed in the guestroom? I just bought a new couch and Im afraid that
while I love how it looks it would be a pain to actually sleep on.

Buffy swallowed heavily. Here we are back with the R-rated thoughts.

She didnt think it was a good idea and she would have to ask Willow
about her feelings concerning the sharing of a bed after what had
happened; actually they had to talk about a lot of things after what had
happened. Being so close together would only complicate everything&
definitely not a good idea! So why did her mouth just open and tell her
father Sure, no problem?

Thats great! We can go shop for all the things we need and the way I
know you Buffy, by the time were finished shopping itll be time for
dinner.

Hey, Im not that bad!

Yes, you are.

I am not.

Are too.

Am not.

When Willow woke up fifteen minutes later father and daughter were still
involved in the same kind of argument, both with huge smiles on their
faces.

Hey Will, sleep well? Buffy asked as Willow, obviously self-conscious,
detangled herself from Buffys body. It was weird, but Buffy had stopped
being uncomfortably aware of the heat of Willows body. Their embrace
had just felt nice and the slayer had been able to enjoy it without
feeling guilty or confused. Only when her friend stirred did Buffy
realize that shed started to softly caress the redheads neck where her
bites puncture wounds were hidden with a big yellow band-aid. She
snapped her hand back and looked apologetically at Willow, but the other
girl was to preoccupied by her own embarrassment to even have noticed
Buffys touch.

Ah, yeah. I did. Sleep well I mean. Sorry for falling asleep on you.
The day was kinda exhausting. Willows eyes widened as she feared shed
said too much.
Exhausting? Hank Summers promptly asked. Back in my days wed be out
partying all night on a Friday night. Tired wasnt in our vocabulary. A
big grin was on his face as he obviously recalled happy times.

We actually had PE today. We did a lot of laps, running and stuff.
Usually were all for the partying, too. Arent we Will?

Sure. But only after doing all our homework!

Hank laughed at Willows remark, but Buffy spoke up. Dont laugh, dad.
Shes serious. She makes me do all my homework and even study for tests
and stuff. Shes a really bad influence!

Then I guess I have to thank you, Willow. For being a really bad
influence on my daughter.

My pleasure, Mr. Summers, Willow said and smiled at Buffy. Smiling
back at her, Buffy, for the first time since regaining her completely
human form, felt hope that everything between her and Willow would be
okay again.

~*~

They walked into Hank Summers apartment in LA and Buffy immediately
went into the kitchen to get something to drink from the fridge.
Anybody else want something to drink? she yelled.

Sure. Could you go help Buffy with the drinks, Willow? Ill go put on a
short-sleeved shirt, its become hotter than I thought it would.

Sure Mr. Summers. Where can I leave my bag?

Just leave it here for now.

kay. Willow followed Buffy who was busy emptying cans of soda into
glasses.
Hey, Buffy nervously greeted her.

Um hey. You dad said to help you with the drinks. Willow didnt know
what to say. Taking Buffys behavior into account the redhead feared
that both of them were now in full possession of the days memories. Youre dads nice, Willow finally said.
Yeah, hes great, Buffy answered distractedly. Listen Will I& I mean-
gosh, thiss weird.

<Tell me about it,> Willow thought.
I wanted to apologize. For the things I did to you. You know with the
biting and stuff.

<And Stuff?> The words echoed through Willows brain. Was Buffy so
embarrassed by her vampire selfs actions? Willow felt her heart break.
Until this moment, she hadnt truly realized how important the slayers
affectionate gesture had been to her. Now it was too late. Just as shed
come to fully appreciate the feelings Buffy had stirred in her, those
feelings were squashed.
Thats okay, Buffy. Theres nothing to apologize about. She saw Buffy
open her mouth to speak and quickly went on. In fact theres nothing to
talk about.

Buffy closed her mouth again with a confused expression on her face.
Willow wasnt sure what was going through the blondes head, but when she
just went back to get their drinks ready Willow felt another pang in her
heart.
<Its what you wanted,> she told herself. <Anything but uncomfortable
talks about it. Just forget.> For some reason the redhead was pretty
sure she wouldnt be able to just forget.

~*~

Buffy felt weird. Her heart had hammered beneath her breast when Willow
had followed her into the kitchen, but when Willow had spoken, when she
had just wiped away Buffys words her heart had started pumping
painfully slowly. Each beat seemed to catapult her heart up into her
throat, leaving the slayer speechless, breathless and in pain. She
concentrated on opening the last can of coke and slowly her heart rate
sped up again.

Wordlessly, she handed one glass over to Willow, who took small sips and
together they returned to the living room to find her father just
leaving his bedroom in a white summer shirt.
Ready to go shopping? he asked and winked at his daughter. Buffy
didnt feel like bantering though and so she merely nodded and finished
her glass. Hank noticed the changes in Buffy, but had no clue as to what
could have happened and decided to let her work it out on her own. When
all three had finished their drinks they silently went back to the car.

Monday Morning
~*~

Buffy stretched her neck and back, trying to get her muscles to relax.
She had with all her fathers warnings slept on the couch the whole
weekend. Her dad had been confused, but hadnt said anything in front of
Willow. When he had asked Buffy about it, shed shrugged and said that
Willow moved a lot around in her sleep and that she hogged the blankets
and the couch wasnt so bad and& Shed lied. Now, as she walked through
the corridors of Sunnydale High she felt he body protesting against the
decision shed made.

Hello Buffy.

Hi Giles.

How was yours and Willows weekend?

Great. And it had been. As long as her father had been there theyd
all gotten along great. Willow and Hank Summers had hit it off; and she
and Willow had had a lot of fun playing mini-golf, going to a basketball
game and dancing in a club. Theyd done all that and even more and it
had all been a lot of fun, but the four hours her father had left for
his conference on Saturday morning had been hell. Neither girl knew what
to say or how to talk to the other. In the end theyd both silently
settled down, Willow in an armchair and Buffy on the dreadful couch, and
watched tv.

No one knew how theyd act around each other back at school, least of
all Buffy.

Have Willows powers proven to be permanent?

So far, yeah. Weve arm wrestled a couple of times and Willow caught a
glass my dad had knocked over, in midair. Quite impressive.

I see. Well, there is one thing I have thought of. The Spirit Guides.

The what? Buffy swiveled around to face Willow, who had spoken from
the library doors. She looked marvelous, Buffy decided. Whatever
Willows new powers would change in the girls life, the first change
had already happened. For the first time, since shed known her Willow
seemed to be comfortable in her body. She seemed taller, confidence came
off her in waves and Buffy was sure shed just seen those green eyes
flash with amusement.

Morning Giles.

Good morning, Willow. You seem very well.

Yeah. Feel like I could uproot a couple of trees before my first
class. Willow smiled at Buffy and Buffy smiled back. It seemed like
everything was alright between them, nothing had changed. So why did
Buffy feel disappointed instead of relieved?
Well, as I was saying, the Spirit Guides may hold some very important
answers, that well need concerning your newfound powers. I will go
tonight and perform the ritual. I assume you both want to come.

Both girls nodded.

~*~

Willow jumped over the fence of her neighbors garden. It was liberating
to feel this new power flowing through her veins. It had taken her a
couple of days to feel comfortable with the stronger version of her
body, but as soon as shed gotten used to it, shed started taking
advantage of her new strength. Shed slept in this morning, on purpose,
just to see how fast she could run to school. Shed surprised herself.
Shed been faster than shed anticipated and not even been out of
breath. She couldnt wait to speak to the Spirit Guides Giles had
mentioned. She had to know if this change was permanent or if itd wear
off in a couple of days. She also needed to know if she really was a
slayer, with not only the powers, but with the responsibilities as well.

She needed this in more ways than one. First and foremost Willow
Rosenberg needed a distraction. She needed to forget how her heart had
started to beat for Buffy Summers. And some holy destiny might just do
the trick.
~*~

Both girls and watcher were standing in front of the mausoleum each
holding a candle and speaking the ritualistic words.

Noli me renuere, umbra ducens. Sapienta manium super me effundatur.
<Do not deny me, Spirit Guide. Let the wisdom of those who have passed
be showered upon me.>

Both Buffy and Willow gasped when a golden cloud appeared above them.
For a second nothing happened, then they got an answer.

Illae res occultae sunt tempoti et locis obscuris. Enuntiare illas
Chaos super orbem vivum terrarum ferat.

What did they say? Willow asked Giles but he didnt answer her. I
wish my Latin wasnt that sucky, the redhead thought.

To Buffys and Willows confusion Giles started a conversation in Latin,
speaking so fast that Willow was sure, even her Latin teacher would have
had problems following. The girls depended on the emotions the voices
carried. From what they heard in Giles voice, it wasnt going well.
Suddenly the voices rang out louder than they had before.

Noli petere! Perturba nos non diutius!

Perturba nos non diutius? Willow knew those words, knew what they
meant. Passion us no longer? Something was wrong with that sentence.
No, not perturbation, perturbo to disturb. Buffy theyre telling us
to go! Willow started to panic. She knew Giles hadnt gotten an answer,
so much was apparent in his slumped shoulders and the angry words hed
spoken before.

Without hesitation Buffy threw her candle directly into the cloud above
their heads. It unaffectedly passed through it and then shattered
against the mausoleums wall. Wait! Buffys voice was loud. Louder than
Willow had ever head it.
If you are those future telling Spirit Guides than you can't tell me
that you dont know how to talk English! Answer me. Is Willow a real
slayer?

You wont find answers here. Was the cryptic reply.

Im not ~looking~ for answers. I am ASKING you. Tell me.

Do not disturb us further.

TELL ME.

It was a battle of wills. Willow would never have thought that Buffy
could win it.

She is no slayer.

The words cut through Willow. How could this be? She felt so different,
so like she'd imagined Buffy felt.

Are her powers permanent?

Yes. For as long as she survives.

What does that mean?

She is wrong. She was not chosen. She must be eliminated.

I choose her!

You do not count.

Everybody always tells me that. But you know what? I get the feeling
that I might just count for more than you want me to know. So get those
elimination plans off your über-powery brains. She has those powers now.
And unless you can take them away from her while she stays alive she is
keeping them.

And then Buffy simply turned to leave.

Just when Willow took a step to follow her, the Spirit Guides spoke up
again. Know this, slayer, who isnt: your fate is now that of a slayer,
early death and lifelong struggle. Why not end all that pain right here,
right now. We know of your pain. You can make it stop.

Yes, I can, Willow answered. By living. I was chosen. She too threw
her candle through the Spirit Guides form.

Lets go, Giles.

And they did.
