~Buffy*Wants*Willow~ Fw: OT-What think ye of this?

Patrick,
I'd say that as a fan fic writer and myself that I disagree with that person. You can have excellent fan fic and not so good fan fic, but nothing can cheapen or make more meaningful whatever series/show is being borrowed. That's already a done deal and it is as it is. Period. Without fan fiction (whether it is Alt or Gen) some fan fic genre's wouldn't exist; such as Uber-Xena or Conquerer fan fic to name 2 off the top of my head. Without fan fic you wouldn't have heard from such writers as Missy Good, Bat Morda, LJ Maas, Pat Kelly, Hunter Ash, Radclyffe, Kimber, Shyfox, Maggie Ryan, Janine or Alex P to name a few authors. All of whom started out writing fan fic (and still do!) as well as their own creations.
As far as authorship goes, the char's and setting are being borrowed, no money is being made by anyone, but that's just MHO.
Is it worthwhile to read fan fic? heck yeah! They give opportunities for situations and events that the show would not or could not explore with the charachters and sometimes even make you go "hmmmm!"
But that's just my 2 dinars.

Subject: ::Buffy*Loves*Willow:: OT-What think ye of this?

I found this the other day on a website devoted to a popular fantasy series:

Sorry, I know there are lots of talented writers out there, but I don't approve of Fan Fiction. Just like all those cover/tribute bands playing at the local bar, I think copycats cheapen the original. But let's not confuse this with having your own work inspired by another author or paying homage to your favorite writer. That can be a fine thing. Afterall, every good author finds his voice through the many who came before them. Writing Fan Fiction is a great way to start developing your own unique style. But, please, keep it to yourself until you make it your own.

Now there are some writers around here (you know who you are) that put a lot of mainstream writers to shame.  At the same time I can't imagine reading, say, Tolkien or Harry Potter fan fiction.   What do y'all think about this comment?  Is it a question of authorship? In a larger sense, why do you think it is worthwhile to read and write Fan Fiction?
