Two benefits of fanfic that immediately spring to
mind:
1. It enables the characters to be well developed in a way
that only long familiarity allows. 100 or so episodes of Buffy,
Willow and Xander allows us to know them more intimately than some original
character who's newly created.
2. It gives the reader
the pleasure of stories that s/he always wanted to see, but was denied
because of the constraints of television. Whether it's Angel spending years
in Quor'toth rescuing Connor, or Buffy and Willow pledging eternal love as
they smooch beneath the mistletoe, fanfic allows us to enlarge and enrich a
dramatic universe we enjoy.
Yeah, it's not as purely creative as being
the guy who first put "I'm up, Mom!" in Buffy's mouth, but so what?
It's free and it's fun. And did I mention the B/W
smooches?
