re: [buffywantswillow] OT: Will's parents.
Well, the one time I remember her mother figuring prominently in a plotline, she did try to
burn Willow at the stake...of course she and Joyce were acting under the influence of the
Hansel and Gretel demon at the time.
I figure that Ira and Sheila are pretty much what you make them out to be. I wrote a story,
"I'll Stand By You" in which they dealt with Willow's being in love with Buffy, and took the
following logic; They are Jewish, and in all likelihood had a family member, or family friend,
who went through the horrors of the Holocaust, and therefore had learned a lesson in
tolerance. If they learned tolerance from hearing the story of the Holocaust, then they would
probably employ tolerance toward their daughter's lifestyle.(I hope they take this tack on the
show, or else things are gonna be miserable with Willow and Tara.) However, since it had
been indicated that their faith and Judaism are very important to them, I can understand
stories where they are treated in a more reactionary light.
Essentially, the Rosenbergs are more background characters than actual cast members, and
therefore can be treated any way you want. I make them decent and honorable, Alex makes
Sheila a bitch and Ira reasonable, Pat Kelly makes them somewhat blind, but ultimately
good-hearted, Shyfox makes them both to be total ogres(Hey, Shyfox, when's the Cigarette
Smoking Man gonna show in your story? Hehehe!). It's a perspective thing. You want to
make Ira and Sheila less conservative? Go for it. Free country and all that! Happy Fourth
of July, go out and express yourself freely!
