Re: OT- Aussie Beer.
You get mistaken for an Aussie? Why? Can you actually play cricket? :-)
No offence. If I ever hear one more chant of:
'Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!'
there will be much blood. To answer the question 'is XXXX really that popular
in Australia?'you need to know something about Australia for the answer to
make any sense.
Australia covers an area of about 3 million square miles (about the same
size as the 48 continental US states or 15 times the size if France)with a
population of 19 million (about the same as New York).
Alcohol is a major part of Australia. It was used as legal tender 150
years ago (this came in after the Rum Rebellion. I'm not joking!),
Australians drink more of it than just about anyone else. We even had a Prime
Minister who held the world record for the fastest yard glass. Another Prime
Minister (Harold Holt) got drunk, tried to impress a woman at a beach by
swimming in shark infested waters and was never seen again. (I can hear some
of my American friends planing to send Al Gore and G.W. Bush swimming in
Australia). This is the origin of the phrase 'to do a Harold Holt' or to bolt
or disappear. So when it comes to beer or alcohol we are experts and take it
more seriously than we do religion. Maybe that is why we are a very peaceful
country:- it's pretty hard to get people upset when they generally don't take
things too seriously. But I digress.
There are 6 states and two territories. Each state has it's own
preference when it comes to beer. Queensland (a state in Australia) has an
area of 700 000 square miles and a population of 3.5 million. XXXX is popular
there (so are redneck conspiricy theories).
New South Wales (Sydney is the state capital and largest city in
Australia.) has an area of 350 000 square miles and a population of about 7
million. Tooheys is popular there and is about 20 times more popular than
XXXX. There are two reasons for this.
1. There are twice as many people in New South Wales than in Queensland, and
2. XXXX tastes like gorilla piss.
'What about Fosters?' I hear some of you ask. No one in Australia drinks
Fosters. It tastes like gorilla piss filtered through a bus drivers sock.
Hope this clears some things up for you.
Tony.
Xander:- 'What have we learned about beer?'
Buffy:- 'Foamy!'
Xander:- 'Good. Just as long as that's clear.'
Beer Bad.
