Trinity's Child 5/?
Xander sat down at his desk and gave a heart felt sigh of resignation.
He and Buffy had spoken to Tony after the debrief about their concerns about
Spike's new arm. For his part, Tony just laughed at their concerns.
"Don't worry. I've got more back up plans and tricks for controlling
Spike than you could ever guess. Trust me on this, he's got two chances at
ever hurting a human. Buckley's and fuck all." Tony told them with a smile.
Buffy pressed the matter further and in the end Tony explained what measures
he had put in place. Xander and Buffy walked away impressed and confident
that Spike would never pose a problem again.
Buffy and Xander had decided to stay overnight in Sydney and in the
morning would go to the airport to pick up Willow, Joyce and Giles who were
returning from Sunnydale. Buffy would drive them back to Creswell while
Xander picked up Jenny, Paul and Spike and would drive them back that night.
Xander powered into his post action paperwork determined to finish it
in time to have dinner with Buffy. He was making good progress to this end
when Steven, his secretary, buzzed him.
"I've got Mike Andies on the phone, he wants to talk to you about the
Oversight Committee meeting." Steven told him. Xander asked Steven to put him
through.
"Alex, it's Mike." Mike was the only person that called Xander Alex
and it annoyed the hell out of Xander.
"What is it Mike?" Xander said, hoping that the annoyance he felt
didn't come out over the phone.
"The Oversight Committee meeting has been moved forward. It's now on
at 1300 tomorrow." Mike informed him.
"What? Why?" Xander exclaimed.
"The Minister will be out of the country starting New Years Day. He
wants to get the committee report before he leaves."
"But our submission isn't ready yet." Xander tried to explain.
"Well then, why are you talking to me? Get cracking." Mike said and
hung up. Xander swore very badly. This meant that he would be up all night
rushing to get the submission ready for the meeting. He'd miss picking
meeting Willow and the others at the airport. Worse yet it would mean that he
wouldn't get home until Saturday morning. He called Steven.
"They've moved the Oversight Committee meeting forward to 1 o'clock
tomorrow." Xander informed Steven.
"Shit. OK, I'll get the info for the submission and arrange for some
food to be sent down. I take it that we will be here until the o'dark early?"
Steven asked.
"Yeah, could you also arrange for someone to pick up Jenny, Paul and
Spike and drive them back to Creswell tomorrow?" Xander asked.
"Not a problem. You want me to call Buffy and tell her you're stuck
here?"
"No Steve, I'll do it. Thanks." Xander said and hung up. He next
dialled Buffy's mobile.
"What's up Xander?" Buffy asked him when she answered the phone. She
could feel the annoyance and resignation in Xander. He told her what was
going on.
"Sorry about this Xander. If I hadn't volunteered you as team leader
then you wouldn't be stuck there." she offered.
"Yeah, but then you would be and I'd rather it me than you that misses
meeting Will and your parents. Besides, I'm better at these committee
meetings than you are. I'm more patient." he told his soulmate. He could
almost hear the smile spread across her face.
"OK. I'll give Will an extra big hug and kiss for you." she promised
him.
"You do that. Tell her that I love her and I'll see her Saturday.
Ditto for Jenny."
"No problem. Love you Xander." Buffy said.
"Love you to Buff. Bye." Xander hung up. He looked at the picture on
his desk. It was the entire family taken last Christmas. Happy days,
Christmas had become since Xander had left his old family and started in this
one. With a final glance at the smiling faces, he got back to finishing the
report.
Buffy waited for the flight to arrive. They were flying back on the
new Hypersonic Transport Aircraft which only took 2 hours to make the flight
from San Francisco to Sydney, rather than the 22 or so hours on a jumbo. The
new type of aircraft required a new type of airport to be built. The runway
was separated from the airport terminal by almost 30 miles and a high speed
train connected the two together and connected the terminal to the city. The
PA announced that the train was arriving and Buffy went to the gate to meet
them.
Willow was the first to emerge from customs. With an excited squeal,
the red head wicca nearly knocked the Slayer over with her flying hug. Buffy
kissed Willow with a passion. After a few moments Willow stepped back.
"Wow, nice to see you missed me so much. I've only been gone a few
weeks." Willow said to her soulmate.
"Well, half of that kiss was from Xander." Buffy informed her. Willow
looked around.
"Where's Xander?" she asked.
"He got stuck with a meeting and won't be home until Saturday. He
sends his love. Hey, where's Mom and Dad?" asked Buffy.
"They were still in customs when I left." It was at that moment that
Giles and Joyce appeared. Buffy rushed over to hug them.
"Buffy! How are you honey?" Joyce asked.
"Great. How was the flight?" Buffy wanted to know. Joyce looked at her
husband.
"Terrific. Rupert loves the new aircraft." she said. Giles smiled at
her.
"Yes, so much quicker than flying on one of those ghastly jumbos." he
reported. The four of them collected the luggage and boarded the train into
the city. Four hours later they arrived at Creswell.
It was later that evening that Buffy heard a vehicle pull up in the
driveway. She looked out the window and saw Jenny, Paul and Spike coming in
with their bags.
"Mum?" Buffy heard Jenny call out.
"In the lounge room honey." Buffy told her. Jenny walked in and gave
Buffy a hug. Buffy looked at her daughter.
Jenny was a good deal taller than any of her parents. Standing at just
over 6ft tall, she stood out from a crowd. Her long red hair, dazzling green
eyes, golden tan and womanly figure ensured that Jenny got the attention of
any male who set eyes on her. This fact didn't worry Buffy or the others.
Jenny could look after herself.
Buffy and a few others had trained Jenny in self defence and she did
knew several martial arts. Her graceful moves belied her strength and speed,
which while not in the same class as a Slayer's strength, was impressive.
Neither was Jenny stupid. A gifted student, Jenny had skipped a number
of grades and had just completed her university degree in languages. She was
gifted with languages and at the age of 6 she could talk to Giles in any one
of 4 languages. Another reason that Buffy didn't worry about Jenny too much
walked through the door.
Paul was Jenny's soulmate. Buffy could remember the day that the two
children had met and their souls combined. Paul had the soul of David in him,
however Paul was not David reincarnated. A full six inches shorter than
Jenny, he was, as Spike put it, 'built like a brick shithouse'. He was
regarded as a genius in computer circles and had such an understanding of
anything scientific that Buffy occasionally wondered if he was part computer.
As Jenny's soulmate he regarded Jenny as the centre of his universe.
Paul was quiet, almost shy and reminded Buffy and the others of Oz in
his calm. Only once had he lost that calm and the look that Paul gave was the
same as the one David gave the Chief Watcher. It was the look of death
incarnate. It scared Buffy and the recipient of it who walked through the
door and plopped himself down on the sofa.
Spike started to channel surf, looking for something decent to watch,
but mainly to annoy Buffy who had been watching a movie on TV. When it came
to Jenny, Buffy had no worries about Spike. The first indication of this was
just after Jenny was born.
Willow had just gone to bed after a long night with Jenny. Buffy
decided to check on Jenny before going to bed herself. Buffy saw the door was
partly open and inside Spike was standing at the foot of the cot looking at
Jenny. Spike was speaking to Jenny.
"A Slayer's whelp. A wicca child. Well guess what? I don't care.
You're nothing but a helpless little baby and I'm a baby eating big bad."
Spike said and slipped into game face. Buffy nearly staked him on the spot.
Jenny gave a squeal of delight. Buffy stopped just short of the door, ready
to dust Spike. Spike was so shocked at Jenny's reaction that he fell out of
game face. He picked up Jenny and held her up to his face.
"Let's try that again. I'm the big bad and you're the helpless baby."
he said and slipped back into game face and growled. Jenny gave another
squeal of delight and started touching the ridges on Spike's forehead. Spike
looked at Jenny in desperation.
"Come on. I'm a nasty vampire and you're a baby. You're supposed to be
scared of me. Come on, please. Get scared just this once?" Spike pleaded but
instead Jenny gave a cute little smile.
"Look, I'm a vampire. Vampires scare babies, we don't sing them
bleedin' lullabies." Spike said to the child but Jenny happily played with
Spike's nose. In frustration Spike put her back in her cot. The moment that
he did Jenny started to get upset and cry. Spike hurriedly picked her up
again and started to rock her gently.
"Shhhh little one. It's OK. I'm sorry. Don't cry. Look, I didn't mean
it. I'll sing you a lullaby." Jenny calmed down as Spike started singing.
Buffy had to stifle a giggle at the sight. Jenny quickly fell asleep and
Spike placed her back in her cot. He looked down at the sleeping baby and
smiled.
"Do me a favour luv. Not a word about this to your parents. I've got a
reputation and image to uphold." Spike told the sleeping infant. Buffy hid in
the next room as Spike left.
Occasionally, they would spy Spike playing with Jenny. It had become
obvious that Spike adored Jenny. He even gave Jenny a Smurfette doll and
would call her that when they were alone. As Jenny got older, she would tease
Spike by calling him Grumpy Smurf. Spike would grumble a bit at the name but
inwardly loved it. Their relationship was like a grumpy old uncle and his
favourite niece.
Jenny asked Buffy where Willow and Xander were. Buffy told her about
Xander's meeting and that Willow was upstairs having a shower. Paul helped
Jenny put her bags in her room before dumping his in his room. Buffy knew
that the day was fast approaching when Jenny would ask if Paul could move
into her bedroom. It was something that none of her parents looked forward to.
Willow came down and got smothered in kisses by Jenny. Paul also gave
his aunt Willow a kiss and together they sat and talked until Giles and Joyce
returned with Chinese take away.
Later on, Buffy and Willow were snuggled up in bed. Buffy held a
sleeping Willow and kissed her softly. All she wanted was Xander to return
home and her family would be complete. As Buffy drifted off to sleep, she
thought of Christmas day, and how wonderful it would be.
