Nights like this night have the capacity to drive a person mad. The moon had set high up in the sky, casting eerie shadows all over the rolling hills. Small houses where scattered about in perfect squares, making the whole effect look like a Halloween themed checkers board. The deathly quiet of this scene was broken as headlights could be seen coming up one of the hills then down the other side of it on a road that cut though the surrounding forest. Inside the car could be seen two individuals, one concentrated on driving around the bends and turns of the road while the other stared absently out the window at the blurred scenery around them as it pasted into the distance.

A small fog began to roll in the area, as the small car grew closer to its destination. Neither passenger commented on this or anything for that matter. They had been silent since they both stepped into the vehicle. Their silent communication had taken place long before this trip had started. Spoken words were useless and inane.

Turning off the road, the car entered a gravel lot near a gated fence. The car stopped and the driver turned off the engine. Both stepped out of the car, noticing how the noise made when the doors closed dominated the silence, then echoing off into the distance. The quiet returned as the two set off through the gates.

The moon shown down on the pair as they walked on the small dirt walkway leading away from the gates. Even though they could see well with the bright moonlight, they didn?t need it. They had done this many times before. Clasping the other?s hand, the pair continued on. They turned off the walkway into the grass, careful of where they stepped. Passing rows of stones that looked identical to the next, they came to a stop in front of one particular stone.

The driver dropped the others? hand and reached in a grabbed a white rose from the inside pocket of her coat. Reading the engraving on the stone that was already committed to memory, she wiped away the tear that was trying to escape from her eye. She kneeled over; laying the rose at the foot of the stone then tilted her head to kiss the stone. The driver then stood up and took a few steps back to give her companion some privacy.

Watching this display got harder for the passenger each time they would come. She would watch a white rose as it was placed on the ground, then that stone would be kissed. Then, it would be her turn. The passenger walked toward the stone, lost in thought. Slowly coming into her own, she noticed the blade of grass that always seemed to escape the mowers wrath. It was about a two inches taller than the last time she had seen it. She kept her mind on this grass, trying to block out the images of what was lying below her.

The inevitable happened, a sigh escaped the passengers? lips as two tears began to run down her cheeks. She bent over slightly and laid the palm of her hand out flat against the stone, noting the coolness and smooth finish. She abruptly stood, blinking away the excess moisture in her eyes that was beginning to blur her vision. She took a breath that whispered into the night, a final plea to be taken from this reality. Wiping away the stray tears, she turned and walked toward her companion. The joined hands again and began the walk back to the gravel parking area. Nothing could be heard save for the sounds of soft-soled shoes hitting the compacted earth.

Reaching the car, they sat in their respective seats, just like every other time before. The engine was started and the driver backed out the car out onto the road. The trip back was silent, even the wind, which picked up at the moment making the trees seem like they were waving. Perhaps a goodbye to the car and its? two occupants, knowing they would see they again on a night like this.
