I have a service provider that gives me CGI, Pearl, and ASP, I am looking to set up a system of automatically generated indexes for my site the After Image which after two years got to the point where it was namely impossible to keep the categories (I.E Author, Title, Genre, Rating) in a respectable order and it almost cost the site its life, which is why I am looking into creating a online system for people to access the fanfic in practically any way they want (I put a lot of information in the headers of the fic I archive) but I need help.

Silly question, but does your provider give you access to a SQL database, and if so which type: MySQL, mSQL, Postgriest, Oracle, etc.

In general setting up the tables will be easy. It's the scripting the interface that will be a pain. Personally I don't like ASP, preferring PHP. But in general your options are a SQL database with an ASP interface, or a CGI database with pearl and cgi scripting.  While it maybe doable, I don't know of a lot of people who try to use CGI to communicate with SQL, which means that it's probably complicated or just suboptimal performance.
