zoned but a lot of the new ones are, some can only be changed a few
time before they lock themselves permanly to whatever zone they were

as far as stand alone players go, a lot of the cheap chinese players
can be region unlocked by the remote, but dearer machines like pioneer
and sony etc, need a mod chip change over to unlock them.
