Re: Mad-Hamlet's fb:
whoa.
Mad, you're as good a feedbacker as you are a writer and that is no
small compliment. That's why I'm replying publicly instead in private
as usual, because I want everyone to know I'm firmly agreeing with you.
Because you're quite right. I have neglected facial expressions and
hand movements for emotional details. I seem to have done a lot of
blocking (I think the girls have circled the room about four times now),
and I'm big on handholding and touching as subtext teases, but I've left
the bodies and faces as mostly blank canvases and I'll try to remedy
that. Outside of some downcast eyes and a slack jaw and one quick pout
by Will, the only real expressions I've used are for Resolve Face and
Brave Face jokes. Oh, and Willow did furrow her brow, but these are all
for the plot, not a deeper depiction of a particular emotion, so I'll
have to work on that.
Having said that, I probably won't do it too much in the next few
chapters or I'll look like I'm cramming that in, but I'll definitely try
to gradually add that color to my palette.
Oh, and while my ear for dialogue (thank you!) may be partly my talent,
a lot of it comes from spending plenty of time fine-tuning and tweaking
and re-tweaking said dialogue. After all that, I ought to get it at
least somewhat right. My current main concern: Buffy, who's sort of
taciturn, makes too many speeches. Also haven't shown enough of her
gift for gentle mockery. And a lot of credit goes to Aly Hannigan,
because I can hear Willow clear as a bell in my head. Or perhaps that's
just the acoustics in my rubber room, I can't tell. Anyway, perhaps
I've kept this conversation going as long as it has because Will's such
a joy to write.
Once again, thanks for the wonderful in-depth post.
Dan
