Willow stared at the corpse on the floor of the Magic Box with
horror. "The heart!" she squealed.
Buffy nodded as she spotted the gaping hole where a heart once
resided.
"I have to ask," Willow said as she collected herself. "Why do they
always go for the heart? I mean, why not the liver or something? Its
just as fatal."
"Yeah," Buffy agreed.
"It probably makes the same kinda squishy sound when you crush it
too," Anya added. "You'd think demons'd go in for that kind of thing."
"Do you?" Xander asked.
Anya shrugged. "We agreed not to talk about that," she glared. "I
emptied the fridge *and* cleaned out the cooker."
They stared at the corpse a moment longer.
"There's also the prolonged and elongated death throes that you get
with the removal of the liver," Anya added.
Willow stared.
"And the added bonus that you could try selling it back to the owner
assuming you kept them on ice and didn't try to eat their brain or
anything," she amended.
Giles coughed. "Actually," he said, drawing their attention away
from the cadaver. "The tearing out of the heart has its root in
ancient tradition." Blank gazes all round. This was a scooby meeting,
not a history society, dammit! "The heart," he said to reinforce his
point. "Keeps the blood pumping, you see. Blood is life."
Xander shrugged. "All hail the great god blood," he
agreed. "Shouldn't we do something about her?" He indicated the
lifeless corpse of Tara on the floor. "She's beginning to stink up
the place."
"Sure," Willow nodded. "I'll deal with it."
Buffy was suddenly all smiles. "Hey Will," she called out after the
cute redhead. "After you done disposin' of the corpse, wanna come
back to my place? Now mom's dead, we get the big bed."
Willow nodded. "Sure. See you at 8?"
