While, I disagree with most of your post, I thought I'd specifically comment on this. In the Universe of Joss, we have been introduces to the fact that demons can be good, and the fact that you don't need a soul to love. The Judge who's parts were combined, by Spike and Drusilla, indicates that love, compassion, and intelligence can produce the trappings of humanity in a demon spirit. He judges Spike to reek of human love, and kills the vampire with a love of books.

Also a very big oops, is assuming that just because one loves that that individual is your soul mate. Lovers are called lovers period. Soulmates, historically, are a different entity. Only recent bastardization of the term to incorporate all lovers based on fanciful illusion allows any lover to be consider a soulmate.

Spike is a vampire. He acknowledges it, as well as others. But even Wesley, Giles, and others have acknowledged his ability to love. So while it maybe the exception, it doesn't mean it can't occur.

Besides with Spike Joss sets up an entirely different parameter than with Angel. With Angel, Joss explored what it would be like to be a soulless demon, who has created horrible atrocities, then have your soul return. How do you live and atone for what you've done.

With Spike, every since his introduction Joss has ventured into the exploration of what is it like to be vampire that loves. Spike isn't torment by his pass, well at least not the murder and mayhem committed. His torture has always been that as demon or man, he wants someone to love him fully. The need for love plagues his soulless carcass, and the exploration is how bad or how good will he become to fulfill that need.
