SUBTERFUGE (23/?)


"Of course I love Buffy," Willow said, confused by the question.


"Willow, honey, I meant, do you love Buffy?" he asked again, stressing the 
word love this time.


Her eyes widened as a faint blush crossed her cheeks, "Oh...that way. Um, 
well, I don't know."


"Glory clearly sees Buffy as a threat to her hold over you," Giles said 
softly. "As long as Glory is here, Buffy's life is in danger. She is in a 
position as protector of not only you, but also the key. Glory proved last 
night that she can get close enough to kill. I will not allow Buffy to remain 
unaware."


"I think I love her," Willow whispered, running a hand through her hair. 
"Last night, when I thought she was dead, it felt like part of me had died. I 
never really thought about why it hurt so much. She's my best friend. I 
assumed it was just that. Now, though, I just don't know anymore. I love her 
so much. Oh Goddess, I can't lose her."


"She has to know, Willow," Giles said quietly, still trying to figure out 
what they could possibly do and not coming up with any ideas.


"I know," Willow sighed. "I should have told her that first night, but I was 
stupid enough to think that it was nothing. Now, I've let it go so long I 
wouldn't be surprised if I did lose her."


"I won't lie to you, Willow," Giles said, "she's not going to be any more 
happy than I was at hearing the truth. But, she cares for you. You won't lose 
her."


"Promise?" Willow asked, giving him a sad smile because she knew that no one 
could make such a promise, not even Giles. She sighed again, "I'll tell her 
this afternoon, as soon as I get home. She deserves to know. Besides, I don't 
want Glory to have any kind of edge. I know that Buffy can defeat Glory, I 
just don't know how."


"I'll make some calls, call in a few favors," he said, "see if I can find 
anything new."


"That would be good," she said as she got to her feet, knowing that she had 
already stayed long enough. Buffy would be awake by now, wondering where she 
was. She gave him a brave smile as she said, "I'll tell her everything."


"If you need to talk," he offered, making a gesture, "I'm always here."


"I know," she moved towards him, giving him a tight hug and whispering, 
"Thank you."


"Yes, well, I just hope I can find some answers," he gave her a small smile 
as he walked her to the door. After he shut it behind her, he leaned against 
it, sighing as his eyes closed.
