The Tumbleweed Chronicles - Prologue

Call me Willow.

Sorry about that; I just read Moby Dick, and it seemed as good a way as any 
to start out my new journal. Buffy got it for me as an end-of-semester 
gift. She seemed very happy about our not having any more classes for a 
while. Bubbly, even. And if a little gift-giving was the result, who am I 
to complain?

What's that? Of course I got her something too.

I suppose I should write down some recent history. To put what follows in 
context. You know, in case somebody actually reads this, having brazenly 
invaded my privacy and broken the little locking spell I'm going to cast.

Yeah, you.

The last semester has been eventful, to say the least. Our psychology 
professor turned out to be a mad scientist who was eventually killed by her 
own frankensteinian creation. Poor Buffy was used by a dork named Parker, 
then drank some nasty cursed beer (which she quite happily described as 
"foamy!") and turned into Neanderthal-Buffy. She then hit Parker over the 
head with a stick, so it wasn't a totally wasted evening. Plus, she was 
kinda cute, in a lacking-pronouns-and-conjunctions sort of way.

Then she met Riley, and then she started dating Riley. I told him that if 
he hurts her I'll beat him to death with a shovel, but I don't know if he 
believed me. Well, I would. Unless I really, really couldn't find a 
shovel. Anyway, Riley looks like he's here to stay. Then again, so did 
Angel, and so did Oz. So there's a chance Riley will still leave. And 
then Buffy would be alone again, which would be bad.

And me? I met Tara. She's a witch like me, and we've done a few spells 
together. She's shier than I think I ever was, even in high school before 
I met Buffy, but she's really nice. And for a while, I think we were 
getting even closer.

All right. We kissed. Once.

It was like nothing I ever experienced with Oz. It was feather-light, and 
sweet, and I think I'm kinda gay. But there was something off. Tara 
sensed it too; she's good at sensing things. So we chalked it up to 
college experimentation, and now we're just good friends. But I still 
catch her sneaking glances my way sometimes. And the really weird thing 
is, I think she's been checking out Buffy at the same time. Almost like 
she's looking back and forth between us or something. I'm probably just 
imagining things.

That's about enough history. This summer, Buffy and I are going on a road 
trip! Just the two of us, no Riley even. We're going to Las Vegas. Buffy 
says she just likes gambling.

I'm not complaining. And since it's nice and flat and sunny out in the 
desert, we probably won't have to fight a single vampire.
