Dan,
I agree with you regarding Buffy?s reaction to Spike.
I?m sick of the reactions that Spike, a being that she
has been repulsed by for 4 seasons, is getting from
Buffy?BY JUST TOUCHING HER THIGH!! What the HEC is
that all about??? She practically moaned before he
had a chance to touch her. Stop that Noxon! Just
stop it?.because its wrong!
Ok, I want to slightly disagree with you regarding one
of your points. I definitely see how they could write
a B/W relationship into the show. But I don?t think
that everyone would see that development as the result
of ?an abusive relationship with a man.? I have two
points to make to illustrate what I mean.
First of all, if that were true, then Willow?s
relationship with Tara would be reduced to a reaction
of Oz leaving her. But that was not the case. The
writers actually developed the relationship between
Tara and Willow, in my opinion, so that it looked
natural?sweet even when the two got together. With
that in mind, I?d hope similar events would be
illustrated when/if a romantic relationship develops
between Buffy and Willow. I know, I know?they
foreshadowed Willow?s possible homosexuality in
?Doppelgangland?, but I feel they?ve foreshadowed that
possibility with Buffy as well. As you mentioned in
another post, ?Joss described Buffy's "coming-out" to
Joyce as a Slayer as being "a lesbian arc", as
evidenced by the use of parent/gay teen lines like
"have you tried not being a vampire slayer?"? Couple
that with Buffy having unconventional relationship
after another, it really isn?t that far of a stretch.
Secondly, when an individual chooses to accept their
homosexuality, it is always done on their own terms.
Events occur in every individual?s life that makes
them reevaluate what they really want. Buffy has been
jumping from fire pans into volcanoes in most of her
romantic relationships ? perhaps those mistakes will
help her to accept the feelings that she has for
Willow. That does NOT mean that she would ?go gay?,
that just means that she?d finally realize that she
has those kinds of feelings.
The relationship between Buffy and Willow has already
proven to be one stronger than many romantic
relationships. One of my favorite B/W moments occurred
in ?Choices? when Buffy traded the box with the mayor
to get Willow back. Buffy and Willow shared a look
that said it all?something like <I know what you gave
up to save me> <The world wouldn?t be worth saving if
you weren?t in it> That type of mutual understanding
far surpasses in my mind the ?creature of the night?
bond that Spike has been trying to convince Buffy they
share.
On an aside, as much as I hate seeing a weak Buffy
letting Spike take advantage of her this season, I
have to say that I hate even more the opportunity that
Noxon and her team is missing. This story would be a
perfect arc to say to young girls ? ?You don?t have to
stay in an abusive relationship?. Perhaps that is
where it is leading?but it sounds like that point is
being missed by the majority of young women out there
when all they can say is ?Spike is so hot? or ?More
naked Spike please?. Spike is a cold-blooded killer.
Where are the boundaries? Does everything have to be
so gray! Sorry, rant mode.
I?d like to make one observation before I finish this
reply. Dan you stated that the ?longest Buffy has
ever been totally whipped by life before was 3 eps,
from the end of ?Spiral? to the middle of ?The Gift??.
I submit that that ?whipped? state is still
continuing. I believe that Buffy the Vampire Slayer
has not been with us since ?The Body?. I firmly
believe that her current state has more to do with her
mother?s death and partly with the loss of Riley and
feeling unlovable than being ripped from heaven. She
is in the same state she was before her death ? and
she is just now, in ?Gone? starting to feel herself
again. And that is normal. People grieve when someone
they love that much dies. I?ve even considered the
possibility that Buffy?s reason to jump from the tower
in ?The Gift? were more about ending her miserly than
saving the world?but that is another topic.
If Noxon would play up the fact that Spike is taking
advantage of Buffy, I would feel more comfortable with
the current story line. I don?t know if they can get
past ?naked Spike? though.
Take care!
Kathy
