To my knowledge, Merrick was never mentioned on the series. 

The series is much retooled from the movie; for one thing, in the movie, it 
was indicated that Buffy was not merely the next in line for the position of 
Slayer, but was the living reincarnation of all Slayers before her. And that 
Merrick was the sole Watcher, reincarnated with each new Slayer.

Dark Horse Comics, which publishes the Buffy and Angel comic books, published 
a trade paperback called 'The Origin', which was a rewrite of the movie, 
tweaked to fit series continuity. Dark Horse has had a lot of luck with 
BtVS; Joss Whedon has a book out called 'Fray', about a Slayer living in New 
York 500 years in the future, and Jane Espenson, series writer and story ed
itor, is writing a four-issue series called 'Haunted', which pits Buffy 
against the disembodied spirits of Mayor Wilkins and Faith. In two months, 
they're publishing a three-issue story arc called '147 Days', involving the 
period between Seasons five and six. Check 'em out.
