I watched the episode last night, and I'll put my cards on the table
right now. It was the worst episode. Ever.
I've hated other episodes, but this isn't an episode I have issues
with, such as where the plotline is going, or character analysis or
anything. it was just too poor for words.
The whole episode felt like something from the A-Team production
crew, right down to the fake smiles all round, and the He-man belly-
laugh bit when Riley + Bint fly off into the night hanging from a
rope attached to the back of a helicopter. I'm sure I used that in a
fanfic as a piss-take. The fact that someone did it for real
nauseates me. That, and the whole James Bond + Buffy in a ninja suit.
This is fanfic land, not something that should ever be made canon.
Even the ending - which would normally have me spinning in circles on
my office chair bouncing off cupboards and pot-plants and waving my
arms madly - was feebly done.
Buffy: I'm breaking up with you, Evil Spike.
Spike: Oh. Bugger. I'll guess I'll just go and get my coat then.
(NB: These are not the actual words, but the same emotional import
was displayed. Imagine Keanu Reeves playing the main character in
Waterworld, staring into the waters as his boat sinks, and saying "My
Boat" in his wooden way, and you can more or less feel the emotional
impact of the episode end.)
Don't get me wrong, it was a funny episode. It had a couple of great
one-liners, especially Willow's willingness to 'Turn on the hate'. It
was nice that Alyson had some great one-liners in the episode. A
shame it was like panning for gold in your toilet. You can't polish a
turd. Mindless, puerile, unmitigating crap.
It ruined the whole feel for Buffy in the same way that Friends
Series 8 could actually turn out the whole coffee-shop is a cover for
terrorists, and Chandler's real name was El Testacle, Crime Lord of
New York and everyone dies in a pitched firefight in Ross's nursery.
Everyone will probably love it and give Marc Blucas his own show.
They could use Orb of Mentez as the script. Why not? They did for As
You Were...
