Re: ::BuffyWantsWillow:: OT Question--minor corrections

Kirayoshi,

Actually, Cordelia has a LITTLE more tact than you gave her credit
for--the line from "Disharmony" is actually "Great big lesbo". Which,
btw, is the name of a very nice Cordy f/f site.

And here's the transcript of "Blood Ties":

Buffy: Maybe it's time to start a new tradition. Birthdays without
boyfriends. It could be just as much fun.
Willow: Preaching to the choir, here, baby!
Tara: Yeah, some of my best--

(at this point she sees Dawn and breaks off)

Subtext analysis:

Buffy certainly does seem to be reaching out to the f/f side of life,
since she doesn't just say she can have as much fun without Riley, but
speaks of "start[ing] a new tradition." In other words, she's
considering making man-lessness a permanent situation. Couple this with
her line the previous ep ("Checkpoint"), where she tells Spike, "I don't
need a boyfriend. To rescue me, or for ANYTHING ELSE [emphasis mine]."

Defnitely sounds like some part of her subsconscious is rebelling
against the m/f paradigm.

Interestingly, Tara and Willow seem to have different reactions. IMO,
Tara takes Buffy's words as expressing an interest in staying single
(about the only good sentence I can come up with for her line is "some
of my best birthdays were when I was single."), but Willow takes Buffy's
comment about being man-free as a chance to express solidarity with
Buffy. And, of course, Willow's own moving beyond boyfriends has
entailed moving TO a girlfriend, so by claiming she's doing what Buffy
is talking about, Willow implies that the natural result of Buffy's
post-Riley emotions would be for Buffy to embrace lesbianism.

So Buffy talks about cutting men out of her life, for good. Willow
thinks she means going gay (which Will supports and even encourages),
but Tara seems to think Buffy is considering celibacy.

Gee, why would Tara not want Buffy to be a lesbian? Hmm, wonder why,
that's a puzzler, all right, it surely is. <eg>

Oh, and also note Willow's use of the pet name "baby" for Buffy here,
which she hasn't done before--and which is her pet name for TARA.

Gee, good thing for Tara that Dawn walked in when she did. I don't
really think Willow was about to show her the door and move on to the
main event, but the subtext was flowing a little hot and heavy there?
:)

Dan

doing a lot of reading into three little lines, I admit
