SUBTERFUGE (29/?)

"It's only natural for you to be scared, Buffy," Giles said quietly. "Glory
did nearly kill you last night."

Buffy shook her head, "I'm not scared about dying, Giles. Been there, done
that. I'm scared that I may lose Willow. I love her so much, she's my life. I
can't lose her, I won't lose her."

"You won't lose Willow," Giles promised, hating to see his slayer in pain.

"I want to figure out how to destroy that bitch," Buffy said, her eyes
flashing. "I'm sick of her games. She's after the two people I care for most
in the world and I can't do a damn thing except wait. I hate this!"

"We'll get lucky, Buffy. We'll find something," he said.

"I just feel so helpless," she whispered. "I want to protect Willow and Dawn,
but I can't. I don't know how to fight Glory, I never win. How can I win?"

Giles looked into her eyes, seeing the desperation in their hazel depths. He
sighed, wishing he had the answers. Unfortunately, he didn't. In this case,
he was just as helpless as Buffy. He'd been unable to find anything useful in
any of the books he had read. They had no idea what Glory was, in many ways,
or how to destroy her. But, he had faith in Buffy. They'd faced miserable
odds before and succeeded. He gave her a smile as he said, "You *will* win,
Buffy."

She nodded, smiling back, "I *have* to win. Glory isn't going to take Willow
or Dawn from me. If she tries, she's going to find out what fighting a slayer
really means."

Giles heard the determination in the girl's voice, knew that she serious. She
would destroy Glory, or die trying. It was his job to find a way to defeat
the God before dying ever became an option. "As I told Willow, I'm going to
make some inquiries. I will find a way, Buffy. I promise you that."

She got up and hugged him, pulling away as she said, "I know you will, Giles.
And we'll help. I'd better get home. I left after Willow told me everything,
needed some time to think, needed to talk to you. I don't want to be gone too
long or she might get worried. She'd been through so much the last few weeks,
I don't want to add any more stress to her life."

"So, you and Willow?" he smiled as he walked her to the door, approving of
the match.

Buffy opened the door, not able to stop the smile from crossing her face. She
nodded, her eyes shining happily as she said, "Yeah, me and Willow."
