you can lock the output of most dvd players to play in NTSC or Pal, on
an older Tv I had it would not play NTSC, so I locked the player to
Pal60, it played the R1 dvds fine and in colour.

I currently have a 68cm Panasonic, for an experiment I set the tv to
NTSC 3.58 only, set the dvd player to output NTSC only and put a R4
Pal dvd in, it played fine and in colour, although the image looked a
bit tall as though it had been stretched probably due to the fact that
Pal has more horizontal lines than NTSC
