I should point out that both Kevin and Bret have taken shit from the holier
than thou types in the past. :-)
Kevin has taken it from both the Catholic League for Dogma, and from GLAAD
for Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back.
Bret has taken shit from many different women's organizations. In fact
American Psycho was delayed a year when Simon & Schuster refused to publish
it, caving into pressure from groups for its "anti-woman" content.
The point? The last people who should be making judgment calls on art are
these organizations. No matter if they're the Catholic League of America, or
GLAAD and NOW, odds are a lot of good art is going to tagged "unacceptable."
And why should Buffy be any different? I don't remember Joss saying that the
show was supposed to be a statement of some sort.
I hated the Spuffy arc of last year, but to call it sexist doesn't make
sense to me. Or any of the other arcs last year. Season six was a poorly
written season, and for that, I hate it. If somebody wants to attack it,
there are plenty enough reasons to from a quality stand point.
But that is the only reason I hate it. The idea there are some deeper,
sociological implications doesn't mean a thing to me. Bad art is bad art,
end of story.
Cheers,
Ellie
